Well perhaps it is a terrible reason, but I think we need that missing piece of the puzzle first. Eidos likely isn't really to blame, any company would get hot if they blew a 100K on ads and got ripped, they just happened to get dragged into it and could have been anyone.
The puzzle piece I want is if this game was the sole reason or the final straw. Most people I see and include me on it, hate the guy and think he's an non-objective blowhard with an agenda. He seems to have certain tastes for various hw and software companies, and when shoved on something he isn't a fan of he will be not just overly critical, but also excessively snarky with his comments. He's the best example of the worst in gaming media immaturity when it came to game reviews...he was a fanboy first and a reviewer second.
Given that argument, if Gamespot got sick of his crap as they claimed with his 'tone' the same word I've used for years on that jerk 'tone' then good for them. In the last year he's been well overboard compared to previous times though it seems to come in waves almost. Take his 'objective' Wii Sports video review where he said that it didn't detect properly, lagged, didn't go where he wanted, and felt off/weird for Wii Bowling. For those who hadn't seen, he was in a lay-z-boy recliner slouched over with his arm draped over the arm flinging smaller movements up/down bumping up on the recliner arm pillow. Sat there moaned how it didn't feel good, how he couldn't do well, that it didn't feel right, and so on. He basically looked more like he was jerking off to a boring porn flick. ...and i'm sure anyone here could bring up his making up shit about ZeldaTP stuff that wasn't even in the game issue wise (though I do agree it is a 8.0/10 worthy game and he was higher than that.)
Perhaps GS didn't like someone who behaved like that being their face of the GS review community being the staff lead due to 10yrs of seniority. I know I'd fire him if he couldn't be objective and aggravated users to where they quit coming around and stopped paying for my monthly fee areas.
Yah I'm playing devils advocate and only on Gerstmann here, but the dude really was a damn problem with really shitty credibility issues.
Ultimately though it is about being exposed due to that move as doing fake reviews where the TILT bar should be the BRIBE bar as the more you pay the more they swing your score up a few points.
