Yesterday my World of Warcraft account's security was compromised. One of my characters inventory was sold off & money taken (BUT bank, equipment & other stuff was left alone)

I'm generally a pretty paranoid person when it comes to security, and I really do have no idea how this has happened. I browse the internet with Firefox making use of the addons - NoScript, Flashblock & Adblock Plus.

I've changed my email & account passwords (on a separate secure computer), ran a virus scan with NOD32 (which is updated daily), ran a Spybot S&D scan.

Note: I'm the only person who has access to the account & the computer with WoW installed.

I do NOT do the following: Log in at Cyber cafes, download cracks/keygens, visit spoof sites.

Any tips/recommendations that you guys can offer?

Here's a suggestion: Don't play WoW.

Apparently you are convinced that there was no way you could have gotten hacked. Therefore, there is only one explanation for what happened: it was a sign from God telling you to stop wasting your life playing a stupid game.

I honestly don't know how this happened if what you told us is true. But to prevent this in the future, get the Authenticator thingee from Blizzard.

Well, did you sell the goods?

Haha, and risk getting my account permanently banned? No.

Being atheist, I find this ironic.

I was merely wondering if there was anything else I could've done to prevent it.

Did you ever share your account with someone ?

What i can think of is that email hack or a keylogger might have been used.

Since your stuff is sold , did blizzard check which IP was used and was it outside of your normal range of used IP's ?

Although NOD32 has proactive defenses I highly recommend that you try a program like System Safety Monitor, RedgDefend, Appdefend.

Dedicated Behavior monitoring is very important along with Antivirus since it will catch many other threats that your Antivirus will miss.

Also you didn't mention what firewall you use.

Was the items really sold off how could you tell? could have the equipment just disappear? I dont know i dont play mmos, I used to play diablo II hardcore on realms and couple times my character would glitch and turn into ghost preventing me from joining games with dead character (and no I didnt die, i was in town and got a disconnection i was also private game no other users), another time i had a full set of trangs and it just poofed into thin air after logging back into my account just a few days later... mind you this is on realms and items I collected from monster drops no hacks of dupes or any of that sort.

I haven't been gaming for such a long time. Been mostly busy with sleep, hardware tinkering and checking GBAtemp frequently.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Hope you've had a good morning.

It's going alright thanks :) I know what you mean with gaming time. It's precious where I can get it these days.

I think that's why I focus on just enjoying single player experiences that aren't too competitive

    How are you doing?

There's also this thing where I'm hyperfocused at night and cannot get to sleep.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    @Maximumbeans, I'm doing alright, thanks.

That must be rough. Productive I'm sure but hard to balance with daily life

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.

It was like all clear and fancy. Tbf I'm not too experienced with chess, but would like to learn someday.
