I fail to see how this hasn't been mentioned, and if it has forgive me. But 4 days ago Gecko Region Free 1.6 was released newly under the name GeckoOS. This is because it also includes a set of developer's tools. Seeing as I'm not a developer, I'm confused exactly as to how these work and what they do. However, they've been coined as very useful by others. Check the forum thread over at Gecko Forums (includes download):
    http://usbgecko.com/forums/showthread.php?t=471

While it does force PAL60, making it appear black and white on 50MHz refresh rate screens, Brawl now works fully with this version, along with a few more games reported working. Anyway, just follow the link to find out.

i think you need one of those gecko devices to use anyothe those new-fangled dev tools.
though it would be nice to know what that seemingly unselectable "Boot from SD card" option is all about.

Though I think it will not come to it, it would be pretty cool to be able to play WADs directly from the SD card. Though I don't pirate VC/WiiWare games, it would be nice if you're like me and like to try before you buy because finding WiiWare game reviews is sometimes really hard >.< (of course this is depending on the title).

Yeah, but you wouldn't be able to play any decent games, only the small ones. Actually, 2GB can fit quite a few I suppose...

Since the USB can only be used as 1.1 right now, any HD unit would make the loading time about 50x longer than a normal Wii title... just imagine booting up SSBB... it would take you 15 minutes just to get to the start screen, and each brawler would take between 2-5 minutes to load all the animation, move sets, and all that, plus, game play would be in super slow motion due to the excessive read times for music and backgrounds. Forget online play! And unless your a very patient person, forget SSE!

I'd like it if the SD were a virtual modchip.

    But how would that work?

    A quick Wiikipedia search said:
GameCube OS A homebrew Operating System for the Nintendo Gamecube and later Nintendo Wii

So as I understand it, the WiiOS thing would kinda be like a live USB (or SD, whatever) version of a GCOS for Wii. As the GCOS would be a live CD, at least I think. So really, the .elf would just load a sort of Linux distribution that is sort of one big file like Wubi so it exits Wii mode and goes into a homebrew mode.

At least that's my idea of it. Call it BS or whatever.

by virtual modchip, do you guys mean something that would replicate the functionality of a modchip without actually needing a modchip? that would indeed be awesome.

but... would taht be possible? i mean, the wii's way of checking the authenticity of a disc is so low level that software, i fear, would be unable to bypass that check.

or maybe i've got the wrong end of the stick and that's not what this is all about.
