what exactly is this GCOS ? GameCube Operating System I assume

1) I googled 'custom BIOS for GC and later Wii' (?) .. it's possible to put custom BIOS on a Wii ?
2) this is 100% only modchip or software too ?
3) it's now obsolete ? for soft modding to use GC backups - only cMIOS + Backup launcher ? or this still works too ?
4) compatibility is similar to cMIOS (which is lower then with a modchip) ?

There is no bios on the wii, only boot0, boot1, and boot2.
