I created a Gamecube backup with my Wiikey of the Sonic Adventure 2 Battle disc (PAL). Now when I insert it, the Wii properly detects it and tries to boot it - into a black screen. My guess was that the Wiikey boots it into 60 Hz/NTSC mode which isn't supported. So I disabled GC Region Free in the Config disc and tada - the game boots.. just now none of my Japan imports work anymore.
GCOS can boot the backup in PAL mode, the Action Replay (which seems to work again magically with the new Wii update) does not (is it even able to boot backups - I don't know I simply tried) - but the Wii Config disc properly boots on PAL as it should.
Now do I need to apply special burn settings so that it direct boots even with Region Free mode?
