GBAtemp's DS Emulation Terms Guide
There seems to be a lot of new faces popping up now that DS flashcarts and emulation are becoming more mainstream. The continued rise of topics asking similar questions like 'what's a passme?' and 'what is flashme?' are testimate to this. GBAtemp has an amazing community that will help others as best it can, but when new users don't use search functions (I remind you there is a big 'Search' button in the banner) for easily answered questions it tends to get tiresome for some of the GBAtemp regulars.
To help with some of these easy answer questions, GBAtemp has put together a small guide listing a few of the commonly used terms in regards to DS emulation.
So now when you see a topic crop up that asks a question answered in this guide, simply direct the user to it.

You can find the guide on the left hand side of the portal under 'Guides and FAQs' or by clicking HERE

[Update]

The 'NDS - Flashing Hardware and Software' forum now has sub-forums for all the popular Flashcarts. Now you will have a place to discuss these specific Flashcarts. The new sub-forums are:

PassMe's & PassCard's
M3 Adapter
Supercard
G6 & G6 Lite
EZ-Flash IV
Other Flashing Hardware & Software
FlashMe (Firmware Replacements)

As seen here

Hopfully this'll help sort all your Flashcart questions, please remember to post in the correct forums from now on

"Passcards" are also sometimes known as "NoPass", as they need no real DS game to bypass the encryption.

Your news on Moonshell is out of date - it plays DPG videos now, which are smaller than DMV by many orders of magnitude. (They use real MPEG video and audio, with no interleaving.)

DS Trainers are not distributed in IPS format, they are distributed in BSDiff format.

where it says this:

3.3 Brick

A non functioning unit. A DS/GBA/PSP that has been corrupted and will no longer work; resulting in it being a heavy unusable paperweight, i.e. brick.
Nintendo DS consoles are usually bricked while trying to install flashme.

at the end it makes it sound like if you're gonna install flashme then you have a high chance of bricking...which isnt necessarily true...just so noobs dont get confused you might wanna change it to something like "the primary cause of bricking is from a mess-up while flashing" or something along those lines....just a suggestion though

OK, thanks for the suggestion, what do you think now?

The most common way of bricking Nintendo DS consoles is when an error occurs during the installation of flashme. Replacing the operating system is a risky operation, so proceed carefully.

good post. i just hope they actually start using it before creating threads. i for one, was getting super annoyed with seeing 3 or 4 "help with passme!" threads on the front page. started reminding me of gamespot's forums. asking questions before actually using the site for what it's for.

makes you wonder though, are kids asking their parents for flash devices? and if so...are the parents just buying them because they're fed up with software prices?

i think i'm gonna actually look int that.

maybe we can have a newbie forum or something just in case too?

in my opinion parents have two options:

1:
kids bugging there parents for every new game they want them to buy

2:
parents buy kid a flashdevice and kid never bugs his parents again
i also bet most parents dont have a clue what a flash device is.
clever kids just say: its some sort of game mommy, buy it and i will never bug you again

@SylverReZ find me ONE community that is free of drama and politics. even video games forums (like this one) have politics section. and for some reason gamers still take consoles/brands wars seriously. even as a kid i never took the console wars bait despite being a nintendo kid.
  • Vetusomaru @ Vetusomaru:
one of the reasons i deleted all my social media accounts, reddit account (although i was rarely using it) etc was to get away from this shit.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Vetusomaru, Sadly, not all communities like to play nice. Forums are pretty much dying despite Discord amongst other social media being available.
  • Vetusomaru @ Vetusomaru:
i only kept my twitter accounts and only because many of the artists i like share their art only/mostly at twitter.
  • Vetusomaru @ Vetusomaru:
lots of discord groups (even the big ones) are also dead for some reason.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    Twitter is way too shittier.
  • Vetusomaru @ Vetusomaru:
that's why i added some firefox addons to block shit like twitter trends.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Discord, on the other hand, moderation tends to not be very nice in video game communities from what I had experienced.
  • Vetusomaru @ Vetusomaru:
nah, discord is also a shithole. discord is good only if you have your own community with your own rules. or if you re lucky to find some groups that arent shitholes.
  • Vetusomaru @ Vetusomaru:
as about forums, when i recently revisited some old forums i used to be regular and seeing how immature most members still are i was like "Yeap. Nothing of value has been lost.". Unfortunately it's the good, comfy forums that ended up dead or shut down, especially because of internet centralization.
