In a participatory story, or quest, the author gives the readers a set of options each chapter. For example:

Jeff has had his character, Alice, walk up to a fork in the road. He has listed two options in the format below.

You grumble as you 'turn off' the very annoying alarm and lie back in bed. This is it. The day you finally get started on your Pokémon journey. You're thirteen, you're a legal adult, and you're ready. A quick glance at the clock tells you the time. 10:32. Looks like you slept in.

"What the hell are you saying up there!?"

You jump out the window.

It hurts. So much. With a groan you lift yourself back up. Your senses kick into high gear! You almost forgot what you're doing! You dash towards the lab at top speed...

...and it feels a lot less dramatic since it only took five seconds to get there.

You smash open the lab door.

You put your hands on your knees, panting.

"Did I... Wait, hah... Did I make it in time?"

Oak gives you a light smile. Blue gives you a sneer. Not very unexpected. You're pretty sure you were friends once, but those days are long and gone. Oak pushes you toward the balls and begins doing that thing where he yells POKÉMON at the top of his lungs. You ignore him and recall the abilities and names of the starters. Blue steps to the side and motions for you to go first.

This is it.

At first the choice seems hard. They're all great Pokémon. But as you stare at the Pokéball, the choice becomes clear.
