Even if he does not format it, and MOVES the files (thereby removing the old ones) I thought the filesystem would be contiguous on new written data.

Given that he says he already did this, and he says now he only has 4 total fragments, I am going to assume your wrong.

He shouldn't have 4 fragments after formatting and copying all files, or a defrag, but it's normal after only recopying the files in.

Yeah but we don't know what he did after he moved the files off then back on. It is only 4 fragmented files.

So homework, odds are this has nothing to do with fragmentation.

He just said only 4 files are fragmented, the sd card is not heavily fragmented.. that is what causes performance degradation. Not 4 files being fragmented.

Just defrag it then homework to see..

Hmm well I have NEVER defragmented ANY of my SD cards I use for my kids gateway based units, so my guess they are heavily framented

Was that 26, AFTER you defragmented the card homework?

I don't know, I have a few gateways I use for my kids and have copied stuff on and off the SD cards for around a year now, and have never experienced slowness, I would bet money they are heavily fragmented. 4 fragments is nothing..

If the files you are trying to load off the gateway are NOT ones that are fragmented, then it can't be this anyhow.
