So I'm getting the impression from these forums and elsewhere that the blue card is a knock-off of some R4i card. Somebody patched the last version of wood to work on this card? However, there are some old reports about bricked 3DS units over at maxconsole and Gateway says not to use any other launchers but theirs.

Is there any huge benefit for upgrading from Gateway's original wood 1.56 to the patched 1.62?
I notice there's something in the changelog about fixing a problem with Rune Factory and that is a DS game I'll definitely be playing. I prefer playing DS games on the DSi XL. The rigamarole to switch back from DS to 3DS mode (blue card-->install exploit-->red card-->run exploit-->boot emunand) is just too cumbersome.

Right now, I'm testing out the Gateway blue on a DSi XL and it seems to work fine with Animal Crossing Wild World. I have not tested too many DS games because I don't have that many (and there are way too many to choose from!).

I'm using my DSTWO to launch the (unmodified) GW .nds program to reinstall the exploit when needed, and have so far (knock on wood, lol) no issues whatsoever. I don't have any other Launcher.dat files other than standard GW on my SD card.

I was asking about the using the BLUE card in a DSi XL to run old DS games. The readme.txt in the Gateway archive says the launcher (_DSMENU.DAT and the folder __rpg) is Wood 1.56.

To play most NDS games, el cheapo r4i works just fine. Would rather use the BLUE card in my DSi XL than just leave it in a drawer.

After more carefully looking at the warning from Gateway, it appears the warning applies to using different launcher.dat with the RED card, and says nothing at all regarding using a different/modified launcher on the blue card to run DS games. It appears the author of the maxconsole thread was confused. I should have posted these links earlier.

I'm not sure that the BLUE card is really a R4i and not some knock off. I don't know whether its firmware is upgradable or if a patched Wood 1.62 will do anything to screw up the BLUE card. For now, I'll stick with 1.56 until I run into a game that is incompatible.

N3DS with timewarp'd whitelist here, using Gateway Blue card with a patched 1.62 Wood, works like a charm with all my old saves of my M3DSReal :D

[EDIT] I also tested the Gateway Blue MultiKernel, it's working great but I didn't like how it is set up so I just got back to "original" patched Wood 1.62. If you want to give it a try, search for GWB-MK01-2.zip

I got brave--the blue card can, after all, cheaply be replaced with R4i 3DS if I ever need it again for installing the Gateway profile exploit on the 3ds--and indeed everything seems fine with 1.62.

One thing I don't understand is how to add a .nds file to the favorites folder.

Is there a way to display something useful on the top screen instead of the Gateway logo bitmap? Like a clock, calendar, or info about the selected nds file?

Will any of those options make the blue card able to play ds games in emunand, or an easier way to play them of some sort? If not, what are the benefits? Better compatibility?

I just wanted better compatibility with NDS games; some of the games I have are on the changelist from 1.5X to 1.62.

I'm not messing with this card in the 3DS. I just use it with my DSi XL.

EDIT: You can use wood themes to customize this from Filetrip. Wood 1.62 comes with 3 themes: zelda, gbatemp, and black. Just copy theme folders to the __rpg/ui and edit the globsettings.ini file to set uiName=themefoldername. Zelda gives a nice clock and calendar for the top screen.
