Don't trust the guide for now. It's based on the assumption that the entry point for gateway's exploit is the Mii Maker QR codes (assumption made on the fact that on the demo video by gateway the console booted with Mii Maker selected).
Wait for the exploit to be available to try turning your wifi on if it will be really necessary.

Honestly pal, I don't think it has been. There have been rumors about it using a QR-based exploit, and most of the users posting in the GW threads are antsy 12-yr-olds who know nothing of the craft.

Lame, so the safest you can be (if the exploit method he posted is actually true) is to just turn on wifi only when you're doing the exploit then just leave it off on sysNand?

That would be bullshit if we had to scan QR codes every time we turned on the 3DS. There wouldn't be a point to the red card if that were the case (I think).

You have to go into emuNAND every time you boot, so you'll see the prompt every time you power it on if it does download. :S

I have said this several times on this thread.
If you have spot pass disabled 3ds won't download updates. I have my wifi on all the time. I never turn it off. Still on 9.2, still no update downloaded, still no notification nag.
If I enter sleepmode with wifi on I will get the notification but just the notification. No software download. If I reboot my system the notification goes away and doesn't come back unless I let my 3ds on sleep mode again with wifi on and it gets the notification again. But with spotpass off there is NO UPDATE DOWNLOADED
