They haven't mentioned anything, since there hasn't been a N3DS exclusive game released yet.
But I'd say if Sky3DS claim they can do it with their existing cartridge, I bet Gateway will be able to figure out something too.

oh thats strange i would of thought 8.1 would of been possible for Japanese n3ds consoles seeing as thats what many of them come on by default and there is currently no way to upgrade to 9.0-9.2
