I believe it was debunked since, when they exited out of Smash, the console didn't reboot.
Therefore, it has to be the New 3DS since the New 3DS loads smash differently than the old 3DS.

Well if they wanted to cash out they wouldn't give a fuck about anything anymore. the last fuck would be for 4.x to stay and not update not even to 9.x even when they stated they were looking into it.

I actually suggested they'd cashed out as a joke a couple of weeks back, but that's all it is, a joke. They've got the superior product and it's cheaper. They've just opened it up to two new firmware ranges. I doubt they're going anywhere.

How would they get a copy of their new firmware? Did they release it? I think not :/
A thought just passed through my mind. Imagine this scenario.
GW team realized that they will never be able to crack any other firmware again past 4.5. They see the appearance of sky3ds and realize that they are pretty much done with their profit cause any guy that had 4.5 consoles already has a gw3ds and there won't be any new 3ds consoles with 4.5 fw that will be able to use gw so gw sales are almost nothing. So they create this hype to sell their left over gw flashcards and cash out... I really hope I am wrong but that thought came to me when I read this

I hope I am just way too suspicious and 100% wrong but if indeed they realized that there was no chance for them to have support for any other firmware than 4.5 then this is a very possible scenario because they were pretty much done.. As I said before any 4.5 user that stayed on 4.5 has already his gw card and there was no chance of them selling any more cards since there was not going to be support for later firmwares.

Yes, i was only referring to the reason for the downtime. This is will be a major update, and since v2.0 had a makeover is not unreasonable to think v3 will have a makeover as well. (I hope something less... red this time)
