You could have just alt tabbed to check instead of surrendering...

Obviously there is an issue with the countdown site.

Best advice required please. Being as you people are in the know, what am I best doing with a 3ds on firmware 5.10. Wait till gateway support this firmware, or is it possible to update it with a game to a later firmware which gateway will support with their expected release?.

Just keep on the version you're on, updating via game won't do much for you

Gateway said they'll be supporting all versions up to 9.2

It is possible to update to a newer firmware from a game, but with gateway so close to release I would just wait and see what they support.
