Super Smash Land, a Super Smash Bros. game remade to the constraints of the GameBoy (but not, literally, for it) has a playable demo now available for free on the PC.

Designer/programmer Dan Fornace says the project's been underway since September, and says in addition to Mario, Kirby, Link and Pikachu, the game will feature two secret characters when released. Brendan Becker, the game's sound engineer, says when the finished game is released, its chiptune soundtrack will also be made available for free. "I'm paying attention to detail where it counts and making sure the music and sounds are independently 100 percent possible using GameBoy hardware," Becker said. "Everything is done by hand from scratch, even the coin and fireball noises that sound pretty close to the originals.[/p]

It's an interested project for sure. Most of these "demakes" are just pixel art, nothing actually playable. And most of them aren't themed around Gameboy-style graphics. If it were Gameboy homebrew I'd be giddy right now, but for now it's just an interesting little game to try on your PC.

Well, yet another SSB fangame with a minimal character/stage selection and might not ever flourish to completion.
It's well made, but the controls don't feel right, you have a dedicated jump button, and no separate buttons for regular or special attacks, it's combined.

God damn it, enough with the Kotaku news. Even though this is pretty cool.

Find me an alternate source with this news then. I'm no big fan of Kotaku but out of all my RSS feeds this was the only one with this news.

Just to clarify, this is a Game Maker-made game, so to all the GM haters out there, think twice before judging GM without seeing great games made with it.

Any well-made Smash game is welcome in my book. Here's hoping it eventually is available to play in an emulator on various systems.

Of course, but there's no reason it couldn't have had D-pad UP for jumping, A for attacks and B for specials.

Gameboy doesn't have pressure-sensitive controls. Smash has directional attacks, including upward attacks. Pressing up to jump would eliminate them.

It's really not an issue to press a direction and a button simultaneously, I've been doing this since the N64 game, and it should not differ from analogue to digital input.

If that would work on a gameboy, then they would have made it work that way. In reality, it would either jump then attack, or attack then jump.

I saw this. It looked pretty nifty, and I'm a huge fan of demakes.

It WOULD work, Gameboy is entirely capable of simulatenous inputs.
Such as the Bomb Arrows in Link's Awakening, you map Bombs to one button, Arrows to another, and use them together.

eh...I might give it a whirl, but it would better for this to be an actually Gameboy title. Hell it would even be nice to see it installed to actually cartridges and sold.
