Game Pass subscriber count is still growing, but misses Microsoft's target numbers

download.png

It's no secret that Game Pass has been a major priority for Microsoft's gaming division lately, as it seems to be doing everything possible to entice players to join, like offering dirt-cheap trials or putting some of its flagship games on the service on release day. Yet, it seems it isn't hitting its targeted growth numbers, according to a financial filing spotted by Stephen Totilo of Axios. For the fiscal year from Q3 2020 to Q2 2021, Game Pass subscriber numbers grew by 37%, falling short of Microsoft's target number of 48%. By contrast, for the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the service grew by 86%, exceeding the target of 71%. Interestingly, no specific subscriber numbers have been given since January, when CEO Satya Nadella revealed on an earnings call that the service had reached 18 million users.

It's also worth noting that Game Pass subscriber numbers are included in the executive's payment plans, meaning all top executives, including Nadella, receive stock bonuses if certain target numbers are hit. Game Pass' subscriber count is the only pure gaming metric on the list, and sits alongside other priorities for Microsoft, such as target numbers for LinkedIn or Microsoft Teams usage.

As much as I like Microsoft and think gamepass is an excellent deal - their brand just isn't as attractive as Sony's - they could slash the price in half and the projections probably still wouldn't be met

It’s going to take this generation to make a dent for Microsoft they stumbled out of the gate with the Xbox 1 and disc sharing and now have to gain back trust while pushing good products to the market to entice back players they lost. The good thing right now is this is definitely starting to catch a lot of gamers attention the unfortunate thing is Hardware is no where to be found . The free upgrades to Series X is another bonus over Sony who is handling upgrades terribly to PS5

MS promotes dev modes as a workaround for homebrew. MS has cross-play. MS is cross promoting PC play with Gamepass and Windows development, basically saying have a gaming PC or a Series X/S/Xbone, they don't care. Just play. They are more consumer friendly overall than either Nintendo or Sony. It's like they hit the wall so hard with the Xbone launch failure, they went running back the other way and never stopped. I fail to see how the brand isn't attractive.

Like mentioned already, what are the numbers they are aiming for? I know A LOT of people with Gamepass on either PC or Xbox, and I have it on both. I think they might be overestimating the market size or something.

I'm an Ultimate subber and am very happy with it. Got an All Access deal for the Series X and sub. Decent selection of games to play, Family sharing of the sub (which is great btw but does have 1 or 2 restrictions), Crossplay is excellent and has zero issues or lag in my experience. Overall decent value for money.

Eagerly awaiting Nov 5th for Horizon 5 to hit!!

One thing I’m finding GP good for, is games I’m interested in but don’t necessarily want to pay for first (at least not directly).

Just today I found out “The Good Life” is on it.

Fuck Microsoft. I can see why gamers might see Game Pass and think "Hey, Microsoft is awesome", but that's shortsighted. Microsoft is still Microsoft. Their Xbox division is struggling to compete, so they're obviously going to do whatever they can to gain market share, even if that means operating at low margins (or even at a loss) by giving away games for dirt cheap. I also wouldn't be surprised if they announced that Steam Deck owners can get Windows 11 for free, or something like that.

But once they gain that dominant market position, you can bet your ass that they're just going to start Microsoft'in again. Microsoft is Larry Ellison if Larry Ellison was a corporation instead of a lawnmower.

At this point, I definitely think it's a situation where those buying a new console are probably buying the same brand as they had last generation. They don't want to lose their library. PlayStation's more attractive to them because they have plenty of PS4 games.
Personally I think they're both pretty attractive brands in their own ways, but it really does depend on what you're looking for. PlayStation has things like more exclusives (for now) and VR.
Xbox has things like Game Pass and backwards compatibility with older titles.

Game Pass is a really, really damn solid deal if you do the "upgrade from Gold" trick. As much as I understand the "I want to own my games" sentiment, I'm nowhere near that committed personally, and having access to a pile of games for a pretty damn cheap price is a good deal.

Maybe making it available in more regions or more countries in a f\given region would help...did they ever think about that?
I always find it funny that companies say that they don't hit a wanted target, but their service isn't even available everywhere.
Just like Sony said multiple times that their PSNow service isn't up for their expectations, but it's limited for only some countries...
Like WTF?!....I would gladly pay and use these services, but my hands are tied, because they just aren't available here...
And please stop saying to use a VPN, make an account from a supported region etc. etc. I don't want that...I want to use it my own main account without the need of using hacks like these...

I wonder what impact the steam deck will have on game pass numbers. It will be a good deal for much more peope I believe.
I wouldn't expect it to move the needle much unless they're gonna release a Linux-native Game Pass app. Most people will probably stick with SteamOS/Arch rather than install an OS that isn't as well-optimized for the hardware.

Like me for it or not, I got myself a Series S with like 13 months of Game Pass Ultimate and I've been loving it so far.
It's an underrated deal and hey you get PC versions too. Microsoft is definitely more pro consumer as of recent years so I wanted to support them for it.
I also barely use PS+ nowadays so I don't know, might not refresh next year.

I used gamepass to try out MSFS at launch. It was awesome, so I bought MSFS a month later. Had absolutely no use whatsoever for gamepass anymore. But don't feel bad, MSFT. You were never going to get me sending money to you every month for anything in any case.

Estimates reckon the goal was 30 million (a bit overly optimistic!) with the current userbase close, but not reaching, the 25 million mark. Missed target or not, that's an awful lot of money coming in per month, and in comparison to the competition, well deserved. There is obviously little to no point owning an Xbox if you don't wish to subscribe, but if you do, then you've got a whole lot of gaming for your money: I've stopped PS+ a long time ago, and if money got tight and I had to choose GP or NSO, then it's a no brainer, I'd stick with Game Pass all day long..

MS has made alot of good moves to gamers over the last 2 years. They unlocked the xbox1 controller bluetooth so you can use it on your phone or pc.

Plus you can get gamepass for free if you search with their engine and do the gamepass quests.

They are more pro consumer because they got their ass beaten by Sony generations ago, as they were trying to force an always online DRM down their customers throat. If they would have gotten away with this then, they would have stolen your and your grandma's purse by now. If there was no competition on the console market, they would charge you per button press on your controller. Fuck this company.
Unfortunately, Sony has become an arrogant piece of shit because of their dominant market position. But at least they still release good games.
Companies pushing for dispossession are neither "good" companies, nor should they be supported.

I’ll admit, I do like the boost to my game library, but it’s so vast that I’d rather play my own backlog, coming from the pc version that is.

(Also, it’s a daily work, but if you make 30 windows bing searches, and like 10 on your phone daily, for a month, you can get a month of game pass free, as long as you keep this up)
