Game Freak has been allegedly hacked, with source codes for Pokemon games reportedly leaked

International_Pokémon_logo.svg.png

It appears another "gigaleak" has gone down, involving Nintendo. According to sources online, it appears that Game Freak has been hacked, resulting in internal data from the company being leaked to the public. Those involved in the hacking community or those within general Pokemon related groups are claiming that while they will not be discussing or dissecting the specifics within the leak, it initially is being claimed that there is a total of 1TB of data.

This allegedly includes the source code for Pokemon Platinum, source codes for Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver, beta builds of Pokemon Black and White 2, beta builds of Pokemon X and Y, and potential internal codenames for upcoming Pokemon projects. Within it are mentions of an online Pokemon game, a collaborative project between Game Freak and Studio ILCA, the potential code name of the Nintendo Switch 2 being "Ounce", and a project named Gaia, which may be the next generation of Pokemon titles.

Further details are slowly being posted on X, and as more becomes clear, we'll be sure to update this post with new information.

[UPDATE]

  • As some of the data from the gigaleak hints towards a "Gen 10" Pokemon game, industry insider NecroLipe claims that Pokemon Gaia will launch for both the Switch and its successor system.
  • Users on ResetEra claim that a playable build of Legends Z-A is included in the leak.
  • Ikkaku, Gaia-K, and Gaia-N are all codenames with Nintendo Switch product codes.
  • Synapse appears to be an "online multiplayer" game. This is the collab project with ILCA, who worked on BD/SP. One claim states that it's similar to an MMO, while another says it's closer to Splatoon.
  • Contrary to the claims of there being a version of Legends Z-A that is close to complete, the leaker has apparently said they don't wish to spoil the surprises of future unreleased games, so those will not be included in the leak.
  • The hack is the result of a phishing attempt on a Nintendo Dev Portal user.
  • Beta Gen 3 Pokemon sprites were leaked
  • Internal design documents for Gen 4 and Gen 5 were leaked.
  • An official map editor for Gen 4 is in the files.
  • Logo and boxart design from Game Freak were included.

That's not fair, i like gf and their hard work they put in their aaa quality games should be respected, not like this
Oh yeah, totally... "hard work", sure...

NOT!

Look at the hot garbage they gave us in the latest Pokemon game my guy. This was as the game "went gold" and was still looking very much like a beta release of the game with all the issues it had at launch.

I don't know about law.
Does intellectual property have expiricy or its forever?
I dont think patent is forever.

It has an expiry but it's a pretty long one.

https://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-duration.html

For companies, it's 120 years from the date of creation or 95 years from the date of publication, whichever expires first. So most things would have to be close to a century before it lapses. And it's likely that corporate lobbies like the RIAA and ESA will lobby for even longer extensions in future. The original mickey mouse would have entered public domain earlier if Disney (among others) hadn't lobbied congress to extend copyright laws.

According to the source code, all pokemon games shared the same code base. The code was very flexible though and allowed for a random color generator function during compile. /s

SERVES YOU RIGHT

LOL!!!! Maybe you should invest more in corporate compartmentalization and security training and stop wasting those resources suing your own customers. Stay losing Nintenchuds.

What comes around goes around. I am not a fan of the games, but it is not like they they weren't asking for it with all of the greed and lawsuits here lately.

It should be only one term of 30 years.

And if the long copyright is to be enforced, then the IP owner has a duty to maintain the integrity of the original and its availability for the public domain at expiration of the copyright term.

Wonder how Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori will react to this?

Jokes aside, I'm sure we can also get source codes for their non-Pokémon games from this leak, like the one on my profile pic.

You call Scarlet and Violet an AAA quality game? It was filled with bugs at launch and you call that an AAA game? Come on...
Literally every game that releases today is buggy as fuck, even EoW has some issues.

SV were great games, regardless of the tech issues that I blame more on the Switch being underpowered than anything.

Reminder that this, despite looking like a bad joke, is actually part of an official Nintendo website:
But they're right. It IS illegal, and pirates a decade ago kept that in mind. Now you have dumbfucks on the front page of YouTube and Twitch just...running wild with showing piracy.

Whether we like it or not, it IS illegal. Hell, because of DRM, dumping games on your own(and let's face it, maybe 1 out of every 1000 people dumps their own games) is illegal because you have to circumvent security to do so, which IS illegal.

Stuff like this really comes off like advertising than it does news. Some things shouldn't be in the news for the sake of sensitive legality and keeping the cancer away in the communities.

Also, for the record for some people making fun of the development portal user falling for the attack, you do realize that not all phishing attacks are based on the standard and low quality shit you see in your emails and such right? The user in question was probably tricked using a much more refined phishing attempt of sorts, likely a scarily convincing lookalike site for the Nintendo development portal. You act like you are impervious to such things occurring on your end, and I am willing to bet a good amount of you have been dealt the same dirty hand and have fallen for at least one of these things in the past with other platforms and what not, so don't walk around acting all pompous and snooty. If you really want to bark up a tree, we can talk about the special kind of intelligence one has to have to flaunt their open support for things like this happening to begin with (let alone your own screw ups falling for stuff), so if you really want to make fun of someone's intelligence, well, consider talking about your own first. This situation does and can happen, even to the best of us, stop being assholes about it.

Check out the other threads. This is a trend that’s becoming bigger and more annoying to see. You get attacked if you don’t act like Nintendo literally stole Christmas and don’t shit on them 24/7. It’s like general comprehension has been way down lately and more and more people are turning back into monkeys because that’s the kind of response that gets the most engagement in social media.

@MrHuu definitely isn’t some random user and everyone here better listen seriously to what they have to say.

No playable Build of A-Z Legends?

Disappointing...

Despite Nintendo being a Japanese company...if this happened they would employ every facet of the American government to find these hackers at their disposal and they would have it.

I guess they don't want to put a target on their back THAT MUCH.

So this is gbatemp these days huh.. sickening community. i'm out.

If you know the source code for the games is a port of these games to pc likely? Would be cool if someone could retrofit these games somehow for a singular screen. Would be a massive task tho

I don't know about law.
Does intellectual property have expiricy or its forever?
I dont think patent is forever.
"Intellectual property" is a buzzword. What exists in law is Copyright, all rights Reserved and TradeMark aka "(C)(R)(TM)".
The term "intellectual property" is a way to scare those who don't know - or refuse to... - that it's not actually lawful thing. To put it into semi-accurate example. Let's say person A will steal something from a shop (and I mean ACTUAL stealing). Police gets on this person's trail and sends a letter that he (or she) is accused of "commiting a crime" but without including any specifics. What would person A do? Get scared? BINGO! That's the purpose of such a letter, to scare and win the battle before it even starts.

Now to actual matter at hand.
Emulators ARE legal as long as they don't include stuff like original BIOS dump.
Emulation IS legal as long as person in question acquires BIOS dump and game dump in legal matter.
What is this legal matter? The simple way would be dumping these personally of course. One owning a console can dump it's BIOS for his or her own purposes without redistributing it, same goes for games.
Is downloading ROMs illegal? "Yes but not exactly". If you own the game you are downloading AND it's clean ROM (aka it's the same for all the physical / digital copies) then it's A-OK because it will be the same pile of data so technically legal dump.
What else... Games that are no longer available to be bought. This is tricky, there is a working term abandonware but where is the end of "illegal download" and start of "it's ok because it's abandoned" is something that needs to be checked further.

As for the source code leaked, of course if anyone would use it for more than "learning to code for myself" or some kind of "analizing how it works", in other words making even a free homebrew would be risking getting a big hammer smash from the company. That's the problem with the leak, it can't be used without starting a war.

There was a time when quite a few GBs of secret Intel data was leaked with rather "juicy" parts like "BIOS backdoor". It can't be used in any way because Intel would start similar war BUT it can be used to enlighten people how evil Intel is because there is a proof of it, glaring evidence. Other than that not much I think.

Hopefully that answers this and some other questions.

EDIT #1

Whether we like it or not, it IS illegal. Hell, because of DRM, dumping games on your own(and let's face it, maybe 1 out of every 1000 people dumps their own games) is illegal because you have to circumvent security to do so, which IS illegal.
Actually depending on the country it IS legal to circumvent security if you do it for your personal / education purposes.
So for example you ARE allowed to crack the game by your own but you can't spread the crack further.

EDIT #2 - Small correction, emulation by itself IS legal all the time technically. If the game and/or BIOS in question where acquired in illegal way then only these are topic of "legal war", not the process of emulation itself.
