I finally finished compiling MOST of the icons that I could and uploaded it to my website. Here ya go...

G6 icon collection

Here's the readme just for giggles and grins and so you don't hog my bandwidth without knowing whats included in the 20 megabytes of 8kb files.

======READMEEEEEEEEEEE===============
Packaged by Ceraphis

This is a collection of most of the .ico icon files created by the manager software for the GBA/NDS flashcart G6-Lite. DS/GBA NAME folder contains every icon for GBA/DS sorted by name. Likewise for the "NUMBER" folders.

This collection is necessary at this point because there is currently no program that will create a custom icon for the G6 menus. This is how best you use this collection:

Use the u-disk manager software as you normally would for any game you wish to put on the G6. Fill it up to your heart's content. Run the G6 to find out which icons do not show up in GBA mode, or take note of what roms you would like to change the icon to.

Note: If you are using an emulator packaging program such as Snezziboy, I suggest renaming the output file from .gba to .nds and using the "direct copy" function within u-disk manager. Doing this will give you no icon, which I think what the nds icons are useful for. (Megaman X can use Rockman ZX icon, Super Metroid can use metroid prime hunters/pinball, mario for mario etc...)

For all the icons that you'd like to change, or show up as G6Loader default icon, search the folders using trusty old windows explorer, find a suitable replacement icon from another game and rename it to the name of the rom on your G6. Check the G6 to make sure the rom icon you chose is not the default icon or not to you liking. Rinse and repeat if necessary. All done!

Considering what rom you would like to change the icon for, there are several good options I suggest:
If the rom was released in Japan earlier and you want the english version and it doesnt have an icon, try using the Japanese version's icon. This worked for me with Rockman ZX
If the rom was just released and not released earlier in some other language, or the other languages don't have an icon too, I prefer finding something which reminds me of the game.
ex.: I use britney's dance beat for rhythm tengoku because its a funny similarity
ex.: I use a random game named Akagi(J) that I know nothing about for digidrive because its icon (title screen) happens to have a big japanese symbol, and this reminds me of digidrive because it's only in Japanese right now. Maybe the Cars (U) GBA game could be a good fit too since digidrive is about cars in my opinion. You get the picture.
ex.: Yoshi Topsy Turvy for SMA3: Yoshi's Island. Yoshi Topsy Turvy can't be played on flashcards (as far as I know) so this is a perfect fit for the iconless SMA3 (U) and SMA3 (J)

Anyways, use that windows search and it shouldnt take you too long to find an appropriate substitute. Sooner or later you'll be getting as much effect out of the G6's pretty menus as possible right now.

NOTES:
I don't know why but my windows explorer doesn't like seeing all these strange-format .ico files in a huge bunch and slows down a lot when browsing through them...so use an alternative file browser like total commander or just use the windows search to locate a good match. Like, type in yoshi and pick from the results.

G6 u-disk manager seems to only show you the icons for properly converted games. So when you replace the icon you want to, it will probably show you in u-disk manager that ugly default pic. You'll probably have to boot up on your DS to see the results of the change. Don't forget to keep "eject"ing that cartridge, G6 is NOT hot-pluggable!

I have all NDS rom icons up to 400 except for 103 Meteos (E). Sorry for the lack of the newer roms icons, this friggin process takes MUCH longer than you think and I promise I'll get to it soon.

Also, there are a few GBA icons missing, I know. And all the newer ones up from 2420 arent in there either, but they probably don't have an icon anyway since G6 team is so lazy. Thats why this whole collecton is needed is because they haven't kept up with it.

Thanks for all your kind words everyone.

Funny story, I have all the...ahem... DS "icons", they just need to be..."converted" (you know what I mean).

However, after thinking I had all the icons all set up for rar packing, I noticed I only saw up to 0400....and this was at 4:30 AM, so I just figured I'd call it a night and release it as a "beta". (I still find it a little weird that I'm calling a collection of program output as opposed to an actual program a "beta" version)

I suppose the pack does need some "bugs" worked out like getting rid of the nonexistant GBA icons (which will take many hours of actual menu testing because friggin u-disk manager does not show mix and matched icons for me at least, but hey I wanna be as proud as possible about this little project)

Probably my next step is to take a digital picture of every icon as shown on my G6 menu, rom by rom, transfer by transfer, mix by match, for easy browsing through the collection. After that's accomplished, I really feel like custom icons are a nice little icing on the cake, but I'm personally going to be very satisfied with my icon options. I actually really enjoy having stuff like Britney's Dance Beat as my Rhythm Tengoku icon. Gives me a little chuckle every time I play.

All this work was done by someone who obviously has too much time on their hands.

And it's appreciated.

fanny-bleedin-tastic!

Thanks ceraphis.

For some reason avast detected a virus when downloading your pack. I aborted and redownloaded and this time it didn't. Sorry if I'm unnecesarrily worrying you, it could just be me, but maybe it would be helpful to let you know.

I'll have another fiddle with Irfanview and see if it can be realistically used as an icon previewer (the current method of opening a RAW image is too time consuming for a quick preview).

Why is this needed, U-disk automaticly extracts the correct icon (ds) and screenshot (gba) when you transfer the files to cart, so what is this good for?

I'm clueless.

@everyone: Thanks again for the support. You know it's kinda funny, when you can see the exact steps you gotta take before you start a project like this, it may end up taking a lot of time ( like it has so far) but its ok because the entire time you know how long each part will take, you know the end result, you know it'll be appreciated...eh now i'm sounding like a pansy. But yeah, it's really not that bad, because the hardest part was converting evey NDS game but even that I could just let it do it on its own for hours and come back to it later. Besides, it was something I wanted to finally get together for myself anyway. Im big into customization I guess.

@weej: I guess it probably seems like I have a lot of time on my hands, but its really just me staying up until 5 or 6 AM for the past couple nights just to get it done. Kills me the next day but hey, now I've got my icons!

@pubjoe: there should be no virus....that site is completely controlled by me and unless my copy of Winrar is hacked and trojaned or something, I swear on my life that I didn't do anything bad to this collection. Also, to be honest I wouldn't waste time looking for a way to preview these icons...I realized that GBAtemp uses the NDS icons as well as the GBA title screens (which are the GBA icons), so I'll try to compile a little printable cheatsheet jpg for those who are interested. The hardest part will be testing each rom specifically to see if it has an icon...at least it seemed the first 750 GBAs all had an icon so I'll start there and see where I end up...as long as it's appreciated, I don't mind putting forth the effort.

@FFVII-2: First of all, for a quick fix to Megaman Zero, I personally use the Rockman Zero icon so try that one as a test to see if you are doing the process correctly. Just do a search in the folder of one of the GBA collections for Rockman and make sure to rename it to EXACTLY what was outputted as the icon for Megaman Zero, and delete the old Megaman Zero icon...its useless right now and will be deleted from my collections when I get the time.

As the GBA part of the collection is now, there are a LOT of pointless icons, I wouldve gone through and deleted the ones that are just the G6 logo, but that takes a lot of time, and unlike Danny and the rest of the G6 team, I'd rather release my little project a month early than take a month changing the sparse menu language from chinese to eng....AHEM...I mean, deleting the unnecessary icons. I'm lookin out for all the customizers out there who I think would like to have a beta collection to tinker with, as unfinished as it may be.

edit: @ Picolo: There is a certain amount of limitation with the u-disk manager. Directly copied emulators such as snezziboy never have an icon because G6 can't extract it from the nds file. For example, Super Metroid (SNES) can show up on your "touchpod" menu with Metroid Prime Hunters' logo, and Megaman X (SNES) can show up with Rockman ZX's icon, therefore adding an easy way to distinguish amongst these SNES games. Also, it's ok but I'm surprised you haven't realized how many GBA roms won't be given a title screen icon with U-disk manager. Try some of the newer games and you'll know what I mean. The only solution right now is to mix and match these icons in this pack, or among any roms you may have laying around, although to utilize their icons you need to convert the game anyway before you can get its icon.

Just for the record, I wasn't being insulting. I really do appreciate it. My Yoshi's Island file looks a lot "cleaner" having the Topsy Turvy graphic than the boring G6 graphic.

THey have a Zelda: 4-swords&link-to-the-past sceenshot. Is it just me, or do none of the versions of zelda lttp's icons work?

Has anyone got an icon for this game?

The icons here, do those have HOT-PINK problem corrected? Like Mario Partners In Time.

That's not really a problem. It's just an error in interpretation. That color is the first color in the table for the icons. This color should be transparent in the real DS menu. The G6's icon extractor doesn't acknowledge this.

You should update the 360 to newest dash before RGHing it yes. But not a big deal if you don't, you can install new dash/avatar updates after. It's just easier to do it auto online before, instead manual offline after.

@BigOnYa I wanted to ask you about your experience with seeing south park. Most of the people a bit younger like my younger brother and cousins that are a few younger than me that saw kids found south park funny because of the curse words, kids at school, that seemed like liking the show on a very basic level.

I could not quite have a in depth discussion of the show.

How was it for you? As an adult. What did you find the most interesting part about it. Did you relate to the parents of the kids and their situations. Was it satires, the commentary on society. The references on celebrities' and pop culture.
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I remember seeing the very first episode back in the day, and have watched every episode since. I used to set my VCR to record them even, shows how long ago.

I just like any comedies really, and cartoons have always been a favorite of mine. Family guy, American Dad, Futurama, Cleveland Show, Simpsons - I like them all.

South Park is great cause they always touch on relavent issues going on today, and make something funny out of it.

@BigOnYa were you always up to date on the current events and issues of the time or were there issues that you first found out thru south park

@BigOnYa there were relevant issues before south park was made, that's why i think a south park prequel/spinoff would be great. Randy and his friends in their child hood

Yea, like them running in high school together, getting into stuff, and how they got hitched and had kids. And how the town of South Park was back then compared to now. That would be cool to see.
