Hello, I used to be very involved in this community but haven't used a 3DS for years. I hacked mine and my friends 3DSs years ago. My friend told me today that he dug his out and decided to play, and he updated it. Now it black screens on boot. I managed to get it to boot into recover mode by holding L+R+A+Up. I then looked at the SD card and it looks as though it has arm9loaderhax and Luma installed. I tried updaing Luma with the latest release on GitHub and it still wouldn't boot. Now it's flaky whether it'll show the charging light and doesn't seem to power on at all. Is this thing bricked? I'm so far out of the 3DS hacking community that I can't remember how I did this or if there's a fix! Any help gratefully received :)

If your friend is still on A9LH, he/she should update to B9S.
Thank you very much for replying. That sounds familiar. My own 3DS is using B9S and is hard modded also. I just prepped the SD card according to part one of that guide, but the problem now is that the 3DS won't power on at all (no blue power light). If I connect the charger, the charging light comes on for about 5 seconds and then goes off. On my 3DS the same charger with the same battery works fine - the console starts up and works, and the charging light stays on. I dunno if this is a separate issue to him updating and now needing to update to B9S, but it's strange that it was working fine and then stopped.

You can try Luma3ds 7.0.5 , that was the last version to support A9LH, if it boot up then you can follow the guide above and update from A9LH to B9S.
Good to have that as a backup, but the problem now is that it won't even power on. No blue power light, nothing. It won't even charge for more than a few seconds.

Did you tried the V7.0.5?
Yes, I just tried putting it on the SD card and it was the same. I'm not sure how a different version of Luma could help when the console appears totally dead now, and I'm confused about what that happened anyway 0_o

Try removing all power from the console for a minute or two, including removing the battery, and see if that allows you to get back to the recovery menu.

If that also fails and you have a way to use NTRBoot try seeing if that option gets you anywhere.

Well trying v7.0.5 was just to see if it is on A9LH, you can try a different sd card with just v 7,0.5 on it and see anything happens. You aren't able to get to the Luma3DS configuration menu by holding down select while powering on?

Thank you both very much for replying. I'm not sure what ultimately did it but I managed to get the 3DS to power on. Once there I was able to get the B9S installer to run, installed it, and now it cold boots every time! Thank you so much, I just made a video and sent to my friend to show his 3DS working. He'll be so happy :D
