I've been trying to use an external hard drive to load some backups, and for a while it seemed to be working fine. Then one day, in Animal Crossing no less, the game froze up on me, requiring a hard shut down of the Wii. Ever since then I can't get my backups to play for more then a minute or two before they freeze and emit a loud buzzing noise (from the TV's speakers, not from the drive).

I was using USB Loader GX and tested Configurable USB Loader to see if it would fix the problem as well, and it didn't. Anyone else have this problem?

    EDIT:
Forgot to mention that using the game disks doesn't cause this problem, just causes the inconvenience of switching disks.

Run sysCheck and paste the results here. It might be worth installing 249dx56 and seeing if that fixes your problem.

Check and make sure your USB device is supported on the compatibility list and follow my advice of installing 249dx56 and seeing if that fixes your problem.

I don't think my drive is in the compatibility list, but every Seagate drive in the 250GB area (my drive is a Seagate and a 250GB drive) was labeled as working without issue. I'll try installing 249x56 in a moment.

Alright. Installing 249x56 appears to have fixed the issue. I managed to play a game off there for several minutes before letting my sister continue playing my PS3. Many times longer then when it used to freeze up before. Thanks.

Any idea what was wrong before?

I do not know. It might have just been a bad install. Rev21 has lag issues with many USB drives (mine included) that were fixed with d2x. It is possible the same problem was causing your drive to freeze. Although I've never done it, the default install option for rev21 is base IOS58, which has compatibility issues. It is possible you installed it using IOS58 as a base and didn't notice. I can only speculate.

Well, what ever it was, it looks to be fixed (just got a few hours of Metroid in without the disk with no freezing). I'm still curious as to why the problem didnt happen at first and then got gradually worse... I came very close to buying a new drive (would have too had it not been fixed from this topic). So thanks again! [IMG]
