General data, isos, already sorted DVDs and the like
IMGBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ (used most days of the week). Rock solid, minimal system demands unlike certain other apps and the ability to tear it all down and tell it exactly how you want things done. What more is there?

Audio CDs (all of 4 occasions a year these days) Burrrn:
http://www.burrrn.net/?page_id=6

After this I have a slew of apps to do various things. Normally revolving around DVDs.
FAVC: makes DVDs from videos. http://favcfavc.googlepages.com/ (uses imgburn as a burning app). My xbox has largely taken over as media player of choice but I still use this on occasion.

DVDShrink + vobblanker, vobedit, PCGedit, rejig and maybe DVDrebuilder, For backing up normal DVDs. Tack on ripit4me or some other decryption as necessary. http://www.free-codecs.com/ or http://www.doom9.org/ has the lot.

Daemon tools lite: virtual drives. http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/announcements.php

UltraISO, not freeware but nice for the odd iso that other tools have issues with.

Exact Audio copy for CD ripping (use all of twice a year these days). http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

i found imgburn to be usefull only for burning images, it doesnt do anything else -.-', so for general pruposes, i found cheetah burner good, cuz you only have 1 program that doesnt consumes much disk space like nero and you dont need 6 different applications

I have a set of 40+ different high grade spanners, why when I can use a cheapo adjustable market job?

Still click the mode pulldown menu in imgburn to get whatever option you want to use.

After getting bored of installing nero, stripping the crap and cracking it every time I formatted I started using CDBurnerXP. It's not brilliant, but it does the job and the interface is very similar to Neros. Just noticed that they have released version 4, which looks like it has quite a few new features, so might have to check that out to see if it's been improved.
Will have to give imgburn a go as well to see what it's like.
