I just found out on another forum about this offer. Basically, you use your Wii U to browse to the specified web page, fill out information, and they'll send you a license key for a free year subscription. The offer ends Dec 24, 2012, and can only be accessed by the Wii U browser (other browsers will tell you to load it via Wii U).

I wasn't even looking for this, as many of you have seen in previous posts about how to stream videos from a computer to the Wii U. Well, this is an option (and it works), plus it comes with extras, like HBO GO and Comedy Central. This is nice for me since I only have the Basic TV package that doesn't include these premium channels.

Sorry if "advertising" isn't allowed, though this is free stuff for a limited time.

Couldn't you take advantage of this deal without a Wii U if you use the Wii U browser's user agent?

I'm interested, but I won't have access to my WiiU until the 26th. Darn.

Should be noted that HBO Go isn't free, it requires a seperate subscription.

Otherwise, its a not bad soloution if you don't mind having your computer on as a media server the whole time.

Well it seems some channels are restricted to USA only , but either way its ok for free where ever you are plus :

Can I see media files from my PC's hard drive through PlayOn?
Yes! And it's free as part of PlayOn Lite. You can choose to enable local media file sharing, or My Media, and select specific directories on your PC's hard drive to share through PlayOn. Any media files in those directories should show up through the My Media folder. As this is still a beta feature, there are some limitations; first off, most content will always be automatically transcoded on the fly -- much like how PlayOn processes online media -- even if your connected device could potentially handle the native file directly. This means that fast forwarding can be an issue for many devices. Also, media you share through a network device will often not be correctly discovered through PlayOn. We're working on fixing both of these issues, as well as making big improvements in the My Media feature in general, so stay tuned!

Does this mean I could have it running on my WiiU and stream all my movies on my PC to it?

yeah thats the theory :) they say they are adding the facility to remove the on the fly transcoding for acceptable video formats , so then you would be able to fast forward a little easier etc , but otherwise it will just convert from whatever format your media is to the correct format for the wiiu "so they say"..

as far as content i am not impressed, doesn't seem to give actual channel access just whatever content is available for free on their websites.
it is a decent real time local media browser / on the fly encoder however it uses a lot of cpu for even SD content and isn't perfect quality.

The streaming from the pc to the wiiu appears to add 20-30 dregrees Celsius to the cpu , granted thats ramping up the cpu to 4.2ghz with the OC genie .On the other hand I was able to slow down the over clock with loss in video performance wich in turn lowered the temp of the cpu

Ah yes, you are right on that count of HBO Go, and others that follow suit.

It put my compy's CPU to ~75% when transcoding with the Auto setting (showing Max on the bar), and the video wasn't even HD to begin with. I wonder how much CPU it will use if I drop the quality down a notch.
