    I have a question...
After the forum upgrade, will the Ava+sig size limitations increase?
Will ava size still be only restricted to 140x100? On some other forums, users avatars are a lot bigger.

Oh, and post your questions here.

I'm guessing it should probably increase, though you should be lucky, I'm on forums where you can only have 10 kb high avas.

Wizerzak: The thread in question is Here.

And that's the only question I'll answer.

I fail to see how the avatar and sig sizes are related to a forum software upgrade.

The current limits were selected to allow people on low bandwidth connections to experience the site in the same manner as those with faster connections. Why sacrifice the readability of the forum just so you can make a slightly fancier avatar? Avatars and sigs aren't even important enough to justify or warrant an increase - it's not like people stare at your avatar for hours on end or anything (even if they may take that long to make).
As an example, on my own forum I've made avatars render at a size even smaller than here (though the maximum dimensions are 100x150 if I recall correctly), and really they still look good. (as can be seen here in a similarly selfish thread - mods are welcome to remove the link)

If you really want to make bigger avatars, then I suggest using external optimization tools (for filesize that is) like Yahoo's SmushIt. (seriously, it can reduce the filesizes of even tiny images).

EDIT: What I'm trying to say is that; the sizes are reset/changed whenever it is deemed appropriate, and that you shouldn't expect them to coincide with an overhaul of the site itself.

EDIT2: My mistake, my limit is 125x150

They both work pretty well, I just prefer SmushIt for it's bulk tool - now all I need is an easy minified CSS sprite maker and I'm done with webpage optimization for life!

EDIT: due to the generalized nature of this topic, surely the topic should be renamed to something more appropriate - like "Are the Avatar & Signature limits going to be changed?"

Even so, I know people still have low bandwidth connections, though the number of those has decreased a lot in the past few years.
There's even a board setting to turn avatars and signatures off anyway.

Any reasonable estimate of when to expect an update? The new version of IPboard looks nice.

After the update will gbatemp still be compatible with the ps3 web browser? I think the ps3 uses netscape 5 for the web browser.

Don't do it! I like having sigs and avatars as it helps identify people when you're reading, but the current sizes are fine. It stops people filling their sigs with junk; having half the screen taken up by dumb pictures is a waste of space. I find most avatars are 80x80 or 100x100 so you've already got extra space on this site anyway [IMG]

Exactly my point, there is no need to make everything bigger.
