I had 5 softbricks before finally getting it to downgrade , I read that someone said that his 3ds downgraded at the first try when he formated the system , so I did the same and yup , it got downgraded on the first try

I actually downgraded both my N3DS and the O3DS, both were out of the first attempt. O3DS dowgraded using sysUpdater, N3DS using SafeSysUpdater. I don't think there's a chance of bricking your device if you follow the instructions carefully. Read the entire guide before downgrading atleast once then follow along with your 3DS on the second pass.

I secretly wish all the noobs upgrade, that way they'll stop clogging the forum with retarded posts
Once they update, they'll clog the forums with posts like "OMG Updated to 10.4, can someone give me the steps to downgrade!" or "On 10.4, how do I restore a NAND backup through my homebrew. Which OBTW doesn't work."

SO sure enough the posts will slowly die off

Aftet getting repetitive soft bricks on my OLD 3DSXl (yes old, i was unlucky), i finally formatted and the first time after making sysupdater work it downgraded properly with no problems.

Of course this was before 10.4 came out. If anyone is scared with the one shot they have:
FORMAT SYSTEM, FORMAT SD CARD, DOUBLE CHECK YOUR DOWNGRADE CIA FILES...
and you should be in the clear.

**thing to note**
If you're using windows, after downloading the needed .rar file, the file could be blocked. Just right click the .rar file and you should have the option to unblock the file and apply it.

There's also a dowgrade checker out there to make sure you dont have a corrupt 9.2 downgrade before you start installing cfw and whatnot.

Does formatting really help? Would I lose all my save data etc.? I have a n3DS and am tempted to try, but maybe I should wait for a more stable downgrade method...

Back up your saves with svdt or savemanager.

Youll of course lose mii plaza data after formatting though

N3DSXL: something around 10 softbricks, then system format, then direct success.

o3DSXL: direct success (but was already system formatted)

I downgraded an n3ds that was on 10.1 without formatting, and it worked fine. (Like everyone else, it took 10-20 tries to get memchunkhax2 to run but once it did, everything worked out fine).

I formatted my o3ds on 9.9 before starting and had a horrible time running sysupdater until I finally completely reformatted the SD card and started over. Then everything worked out. No soft bricks on either system.

It seems quite possible that a lot of the hard bricks people are getting may have something to do with bad SD cards. I probably got lucky with that o3ds. I'd definitely format the card before trying it again. Or buy a new card, but I wasn't going to go that far.

My first New 3DS got fully bricked when trying to downgrade due to my using the O3DS downgrade pack. My second New 3DS downgraded after about 30 tries, but did not get any form of brick (all of the attemps were from Sysupdater not loading properly).
