I had the same problem. I guess you have to use the same VMUs for all games for now, until the bug is fixed.

Make sure you have OpenGL (not vulkan) enabled in video drivers (well..if everything else is set up correctly of course..and yeah, atmosphere is free and opensource, you can use it since the flycast core is very impressive there)

The current Lakka core (still named Reicast?) has nothing to do with m4wx's work here on the Horizon Flycast core. Better to check the Lakka thread for help if you want to run it that way.

Glad to know I'm not alone at least! Lost too many saves this way, I'll just revert for the time being :) Just tested disabling it and it works fine.

Pretty sure it's not the creation/saving of the game-specific VMU, but loading it again on startup. Can see individual game ones fine but it doesn't seem to load them when the core/game loads. No idea if it happens on other platforms either, but there's no mention of it on git so maybe it is only Switch :/

Like what I've been telling people: right now, use the BIOS folder(s) for storing your VMUs from your main PC.

I mean, we should have an official release thread for the Flycast core at this point. Sure, it still has problems (I still can't be taken for a ride, and no, not that kind of ride, resident pervert! ;) ), but at the very least, we could have a FAQ and everything up on the front page so people aren't confused!

I mentioned this a couple of pages ago. The option doesn't work right now, and @Silent_Gunner , I don't know what you mean by "main PC", but I think we both mean the unique VMUs created and saved by the switch. They aren't found afterwards and disappear into limbo.

My apologies, missed that others had already encountered the same issue. Hopefully it gets fixed soon, but at least it hasn't broken anything significant.

As in, your .vmu files on RetroArch on PC. If you download some saves from somewhere like GameFAQs, use a program like VMU Explorer to import them, save the new .vmu file and name it to what RetroArch is looking for, and then copy it to wherever the same folder is for your BIOS is on RetroArch, it should work. I tried it myself and figured it out after doing some experimentation one early afternoon 2 weeks or so ago!

Nah, I'ts fine. If one person encounters a problem, it's probably user error. If several people complain about it, there is probably something wrong :P

Sorry, I don't want to sound not greatful or something, but we never mentioned a PC or downloaded saves in the first place.
I meant the unique VMUs created by the option in retroarch on the switch. They are saved and - after you reload the game - do disappear or aren't recognized by the emulator. This feature seems to be buggy for now.

Edit: Just to be clear, I never used Retroarch on PC, only on Switch. I never moved any files around. The App seems to save them in the wrong directory, or search for them in the wrong directory, or deletes them. I don't know.

I don't know a shitload about coding, but I had a look here and I assume there's code used to create the VMU files but not load them when a game starts. Couldn't be that difficult to fix, I assume it's just an oversight and it'll get fixed soon.

What I'm saying is that you shouldn't use those to begin with at this point in time. The only games that need large save files that might warrant using that feature, from what I remember, were the Sega Sports games if you were making custom teams/players, and Shenmue 1 and I'm assuming Shenmue 2 if you play the PAL version. And yes, it doesn't put them into the same directory as your other saves atm. So your only option right now, if you don't want to use the NAOMI versions of certain games and input a bunch of codes to unlock everyone in MVC2 or, Heaven help you, manually re-unlock everything in the DC version along with some other games like Power Stone 1 and 2 and Soul Calibur, then the best method is what I described in my previous post. Personally, I'd rather use those files myself as opposed to having to jump through some hoops like what you have to do with PS1 memory card files for individual games.

Fire Pro Wrestling D (a pretty popular Japanese wrestling game) uses a whole memory card.

So, here's what I did: I loaded up MVC2, opened up the options in the Quick Menu, set the per-game VMU option to only the first slot, did a manual save, exited using Quit RA, and loaded up NX-Shell. The file for MVC2 for DC is in the root of the savefile folder. So, I decided to load up MVC2 again, and it acts like the savefile I created (for only the A1 slot, mind you) is a fresh new file, nothing unlocked by the prompt to create a new file for auto-saving purposes. After quitting RetroArch with the Quit RA option within RA, and restarting the game, it does indeed turn out that it doesn't load per-game saves for some reason. @Shaneus' theory seems to be on point about per-game saves at this point in time!

I've created a new github issue for this problem, you can look at it here. Hope I didn't tread on any toes copying posts directly from here into it, I did attribute credit where appropriate :)
