The difference being writing files to the NAND and downgrading system titles are separate things. And fuck off, said friend has purchased a ton of real games and still planned to - he just wanted to have the option. You need arm9 and arm11 access to touch the NAND or downgrade the system titles (on 11.x). So unless you are just nitpicking over literally the same thing, end result is that you can't do anything right now.

From a quick google search, he's helped people on this forum and did some work on a tool called arm9hook. Err... don't know why that's important. He still didn't need to trash me.

Read the last page. It's writable within DSi mode or through a hardmod since it's unprotected in that state. I don't know the viability of actually doing what @zoogie mentioned but I don't plan on trying it. And yeah, he'd be right saying I did NAND dumping with arm9 access on 9.2, my memory was foggy of how Gateway had their payload working.

Yep I totally agree. But he should probably ask whether his friend prefers a hard mod or a new 3DS on exploitable firmware. I personally would never get a hard mod because I don't want a hole in the back of my 3DS. Honestly OP is kinda obligated to pay for either of these considering he completely ruined any chance his friend had of hacking that 3DS atm. And I'm not basing this on anything concrete but I get the feeling that 11.0 isn't gonna be another 10.7 (where we barely had to wait for it to become exploitable). I think it'll be more like how browserhax probably won't ever be available on newer firmware (or at least not for a very long time).

getting a hardmod doesn't necessarily mean you need to have a hole cut, if you only want it for a 1 off downgrade/unbrick you can just get a temp mod with no port, or even if you do want a port you can have it hidden under the battery cover so you wouldn't see it unless you remove the back plate, or if your really really against cutting but want a fallback port you could ask the modder to just leave the port attached inside with no external access to it, and should the need ever arise you unscrew the back and have at it
