Here's the good news! After installing RxTools on my Old 3DS, I can get my R4i Gold flash cartridge to work. The only problem is that I have to run RxTools first, which is an awkward and time-consuming process. I've read that I can flash the cartridge to make it work with my 3DS at its current firmware (9.2), but hell if I can figure out HOW. I've tried following the instructions on the web site listed on the bottom of the cartridge, but the steps shown don't make any sense... none of their screens match up with mine at all.

So I ask you, GBATemp community, what can I do to update this cartridge and make it play nice with my 3DS? Right now, the R4i is recognized by the 3DS as some Japanese game with an egg on angel wings. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

This is the web site on the cartridge:

    http://r4ids.cn/

And I tried both the 1.72b kernal, available here:

    http://www.r4i-gold.eu/downloade.asp

And another version, 1.83. But I can't recall where I found that one. There's a copy here:

    http://3ds-flashcard.com/blog/r4-3d...ng-more-ds-games-on-3ds2ds-and-n3ds-consoles/

I'll be honest with you; I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm throwing everything I can at this cartridge and I'm probably going to end up bricking it if I'm not careful. I guess what I'm looking for is clarification... what I should be doing for this specific cartridge. There are dozens of R4s on the market, which makes the process even more confusing.

By the way, I know this cartridge won't run 3DS games. That's not the goal. I want to use it for emulation, because the Old 3DS doesn't work well for that purpose but the original DS, strangely, does.

? Why aren't you launching it from rxtools ? Takes 25s to boot if you have a coldboot setup. The Japanese game is the R4i working as intended.

I can, I'd just prefer to have immediate access rather than waiting a half minute. RXTools is a little goofy for me; I expected it to just start on cold boot but it doesn't really work that way. I have to deliberately start it in the Homebrew Browser, which works, but isn't terribly efficient. I tried the auto.3dsx trick but that just gave me red screens.

Huh ? Why would you start it in the homebrew launcher ? I don't understand. That's way longer than coldboot

Okay, I'll bite. How do you start it? Is there a trick I'm missing?

You'll pardon my ignorance. I just installed RXTools on this system and I don't know the ins and outs. Is there a keystroke you're supposed to hold down on boot? Because if I don't press anything, I get the standard OS and none of the hacks (the flashcard white list, CIAs, etc.) function.

if the cartridge comes from R4iDS.cn, R4 Wood will work fine.

Thanks for the advice. CTRboot Manager does simplify the process somewhat. Now I gotta figure out how to install ReiNAND. The title screen with the anime girl comes up, but I just get a black screen after that. RXTools seems to work fine, but I still don't have a grasp of the finer points of its use. Mostly the CIA stuff. Hopefully I'll be able to muddle through here. I'd really, REALLY like to use this thing to play some Game Boy Advance games!

EDIT: Wait. ReiNAND doesn't work with the Old 3DS? Well that explains a thing or three.

ReiNand is N3DS exclusive, but AuReiNand (a mod of ReiNand) works on O3DS too.

I just want to thank you guys for all your help. I'm running custom firmware on my Old 3DS and while it's not perfect, it's working more smoothly than it had before I got your advice.
