Nintendo did state that it would only ever do "meaningful DLC". I'm pretty sure that unlike some others they wont put out an unfinished game and expect gamers to pay to unlock content.

So what does this mean really? DLC for future 3DS games or just a test-run on the paid download content?

    What will it have?
    Extra characters? Special weapons?
Well, I just hope it's something good and priced resonably. =3

Doesn't sound like a test run at all and Nintendo have already made it clear that 3rd party publishers can "do what they please" regarding paid DLC.

If it adds more chapters, story, instead of colors or weapons, I'll gladly pay for it.

Hmm so this can be a handheld version of the Xbox360. Where you pay points to buy exclusively DLC Mii's, (Mini Individual Icons) for starters. I can see the advantage of this DLC however, what I fear is the 'limited' data towards the DLC you can inpute inside the game itself unless I'm not too sure about the average size of DLC.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw Fire Emblem in the title, but when I read the whole title I was very sad.... I hate paid DLC.

There's a chance it may be cheap, and good quality DLC...

I like DLC, it's a way to make the game cheaper at the start by including less content then only people who want the full or more developed game can pay the extra whatever money to get the rest.
Not only that, but it allows the developers to give faster releases because they don't have to worry about completing the game before release.

I thought Nintendo said they themselves would not do paid DLC.

This is what's worng with gamers nowadays...
What happened to not releasing a game til its ready? DLC is just a money making scheme which should die.

I was half being sarcastic with that post lol.

Half of the post was supposed to support DLC, the other half is supposed to say that gaming companies use it to milk more money :)

No they just said only "meaningful"

Huh? Why are those games still at full retail price then? As for releasing unfinished games...that is a rip off, its content that was fully intended to be in the final version but they didn't have time to do it so they expect gamers to pay even more for a game.

Some paid DLC can be excellent if handled as extra content separate to the main game (Enslaved & Red Dead Redemption) some get it very right and others like nearly every Capcom title just milk it. DLC like what they do just give gamers more reasons to pirate and buy used if they're having to buy more content INTENDED for the original release just to finish the story.

I don't think Nintendo would do something like that at all.

Those worried about DLC for Fire Emblem--that article doesn't clearly suggests anything. We'll probably learn more at the Nintendo stream thing tonight.

The last Fire Emblem had special DSi functionality advertised. You know what it was? Region protection. The features aren't always what you think they might be. For example, the only DLC in this game might be the ability to purchase and download the title like on Steam.

We need more information before we start guessing at things, or we're just gonna get things blatently wrong at times :)

Finally found this quote from Reggie:

Also Kotaku reports that DLC pricing will be several hundred yen which is about 5 quid.

I don't trust the developers enough to fully approve of DLC unless it's just extra stuff such as the DLC in Phantasy Star Portable 2 or Gundam Extreme VS especially after what I've seen in Idolm@ster, prices jacked up to ridiculous rates, having an incomplete game is a recipe for the developers to charge whatever absurd price they want for DLC and you have to have it to even enjoy the game. Having DLC as an optional choice with an already finished game keeps the prices low for the extra content in most cases. Namco-Bandai is the worst offender in this except for the Gundam titles with DLC, 500 yen for extra mobile suits in Extreme VS and upcoming Gundam Unicorn is reasonable and they did a good job keeping MS prices low but the IM@S DLC needs a 50-70% drop in price badly.
