When selecting Espers is there anyway to know which Espers will be called when starting a mission? I'm doing some training before taking on Mydia in chapter 8-4 and I had Shiver in one slot. Shiver would be called when I started a Monster Melee. When I replaced Shiver with a normal element all of a sudden only my level I Espers were called at the start of the Monster Melee. Is this random or is there a way to figure out which Espers are summoned?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply, can't believe I didn't notice the little crystals. I now understand the Esper summoning a little bit better. However I have a further question.

Now that I can see which Espers are summoned, is there anyway to predict how a troupe is called based on the Espers chosen?

For example 3 different troupe's, with *'s denoting which have the crystals:
I. Sylph*
I. Chocobo*
II. Carbuncle*
II. Diablos
III. Odin

I. Quetzalcoatl*
I. Goblin*
II. Carbuncle*
II. Atomos
III. Ultima

I. Aquarius
I. Sahagin*
II. Carbuncle*
II. Ixion*
III. Ramuh

Ixion is worth a 14 cost, as is Atomos, while Diablos is a 18 cost. I could understand Diablos not being chosen based on cost, but why is Atomos not chosen when he is the same cost as Ixion?

Well in my experience, I either get 2-2 of the Tier II Espers or 4-0 of the Tier II Espers. Random I would think. I'm not sure of that myself...

And I didn't know those crystals denoted who would be summoned. That's quite helpful.

Too bad my save data was stuck on Saving... and I had to shut off my DS. Damn you corrupting data!

As far as I know, they will summon each of the types for the leaders with that type. I also know that only one III esper can be on at a time, so that means they will never start with it. The rest I don't know.

I think it might have to do with who your opponent has. I was just playing around with it and no matter what I did it wouldn't summon the teir II esper. Even if I removed all tier I's, it still wouldn't summon the tier II. The only tier II it would consider was Carbuncle.

It's weird, it's not random though. I think there's some complex formula behind this. Which really does suck because it gives you less control to start a match unless you play with the selection a while to get one that you're happy with.

Keep in mind that each leader will call the Rank 2 esper that matches his/her type, if there arent any, then he will call a rank 1 esper of matching type, and if there arent any as well, will just call some other rank 1.

Keep in mind that Penelo, despite being Ranged, is a Healing Unit, so she will call Carbuncles. Else, she will call White Hare. Else, she will call any rank 1 ranged esper, and in last case, if you dont have that as well, she will use any melee/flying rank 1.

You can control the initial summons with this logic.
Since you cant have two rank 2 espers in same group, one of the leader's types will forcefully get a rank 1, unless you only use leaders of 2 types.

Ie:
In your first case, you surely didnt have any flying type leader in party, so no one could start with the Diablos, and you surely had Penelo, as she is the only one that can start with Carbuncles.

You CAN use Rank 2 on the Rank 3 slot, though. That might works, giving all of them Rank 2 espers.

Thanks for that information! I didn't know they only summoned their own type at the beginning of the mission. It makes a lot of sense now, I'll probably test that a little later tonight, but I think I finally understand it all now

Sorry, i screwed up with the typos, but thanks for correcting me.
And yeah you can use 3 rank 2 espers as long as you sacrifices the rank 3. This is useful for those missions without summon gates, where the rank 3 is wasted (you can see in the pre-fight screen if it will have gates or not), i completely forgot that!
