Final Fantasy VIII Remastered now has a release date

It's been over 20 years since Final Fantasy VIII released on the PlayStation 1, becoming a classic JRPG to many. To the surprise of many, especially due to the commonly thought theory that the original source code had been lost, Square Enix announced a complete remaster of FFVIII for modern platforms. As the trend appears to be, a game is announced at E3, and the release date is given at Gamescom, and this game is no different. Today, Square Enix revealed the planned launch date for Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, which is September 3rd. You'll be able to pick up the game for $19.99 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, with the new version bringing with it improvements such as turning off encounters, a 3x speedup, and giving yourself max HP/ATB. For the PC version, players will get a few extra cheats, which give you all items, cards, guardian force, gil, magic, special skills, and cards.

sad news that they are censoring the game

I hope this is just for the PS4 copy

while some may point out they are examples of minor changes, i need to remain consistent with my principles and censorship is censorship.
so only time will tell if this remains a purchase or if I will sail the high seas out of spite.

This. If the PC release is the same then I can only I hope that modders will "fix" this.

It's hilarious how hung up people are over it on Steam lol. It's a redesign, not censorship.

If you want FF8 porn, just use Google images or 4chan

"But muh boobz" people cry on Steam forums. Oh please

it has nothing to do with FF8 porn, its the principle of it.

a remaster specifically refers to changing the quality of the sound or of the images/graphics, or both, of previously created art to improve fidelity.

a redesign by definition is not a remaster thus censorship.

they are free to do a re-imagining but label it as such and then i also expect it to be drastically different from the original with no recognizable upscaled assets.

if you won't chastise the companies you pay to do a specific job for you then what's to stop them from committing worse acts of censorship later?

in my opinion, any act of censorship is too much.
i won't be an apologist for digital "book burning"

they know my price to get me to buy it, if they dont reverse course its tantamount to them giving me permission to "sail the high seas" because as i pointed out thats the alternative.

so either they won't care because I'm so insignificant or they feel they will make more money with their neo-puritan redesign, despite my choice.

either way I'm standing on principle whether you think they're flawed principals or not.

Still got it on Switch, helluva lot better than the 2013 version for the following reasons:

- Quetzalcoatl sounds are restored, in the previous PC ports, the sound was swapped with Phoenix and therefore broken*
- Disable encounters without having to learn the no encounter ability
- Revamped 3D models, backgrounds look smoother and not the pixelated eye-bleeding images on the 2013 version
- Full controller support, no longer being forced to use only the analog stick
- No having to make a Square Enix account to sign in to play the game
- Original soundtrack without having to install mods

*You can technically fix the GF sounds, but, this mod breaks other sounds and can crash the game; what it does it replaces the sound bank file for the entire game

i just started playing the game. I'm not very far in it. I beat the game so many years ago that I've forgotten almost everything. from what I've played, I have two gripes. one is tutorials being on a computer in your classroom. it's much easier to understand by doing rather than just reading a bunch of stuff. too much information, so my head felt like it was going to explode. luckily, they do have some visual help as you progress through the game, or so I hope. Quistis helps with that. the other thing is that I wish the camera and movement analog sticks had been swapped.
