The gamecube merely acted as a hub to play 4 player, the game was played in a sort of LAN with the gameboys.

Local coop is still achievable and they even give yoy access to almost the entirety of the game if a friend has the whole game.

What did people expect? Split screen? This gane was unique and to play it with friends you gotta have your own console.

I think people were expecting to be able to play together if they all have a Switch, and the recent news makes it seem like that they have to go through the internet to do it, instead of being able to do it together locally. I didn't see anyone mention split-screen or playing together on one single console--though that would be a nice feature. I might be misreading what people are saying though.

That is true, but it was still there. But in a world where most people have a smartphone, it shouldn't be *that* hard.

"Trust me, you d-d-d-on't want local coop", mmmh vanilla flavour.

This FF was a no-go from the very start with its s****y game design that asked for a 100€ controller per player.
Like four swords on GC, that's what "whales" dedicated games looked like back then.

    probably some stupid reason like
to have US players play with japanese players, the US version would need to include japanese fonts.

    wow. just...wow.

    So to summarize:
    - To play with each other "locally" and recreate the experience of the ORIGINAL GAME, you have to all 4 have Nintendo Online subscriptions and separate copies of the game (trial works? limited?)
    - Even if you do so, you cannot progress through the game as a group. Only the "host" can unlock the next level and get stuff for the chalice, no one else who was playing (you keep items if you aren't the host, that's it)
    - You cannot play with friends overseas/different zone
    - Digital only in the states and other places
    - Probably loads of other stuff they decided to remove to monetize the experience even more

    Absolutely livid.

Rather than experience the game as a group, you're expected to rehash the same levels over and over. This isn't a F****** "map" or "track" style game, where you just pop into whichever and play your favorite, it's meant to be a F****** linear, friend-based, dungeon crawler, mutually-experienced plot F****** experience M***** * ***** *** ** ** *** ***** *****ing jerks.

so disappointed they decided to be complete aholes about this whole thing.

I'm mostly annoyed that local co-op was removed, which is understandable due to the immense and diverse list of devices and operating systems the game is available for, but the least Square Enix could have done was allow the same devices to connect together, such as Android + Android and Switch + Switch.

I would have been even happier if the PS4 and Nintendo Switch allowed for multiplayer like the original GameCube version, where up to 4 people could play multiplayer on the same console.
