So is anyone who has ever died for their beliefs/freedom and what they thought was the right thing, were they all just one less idiot?
Seeing you want to compare this situation to wars of the past, let's compare! A soldier who fought for our freedom during the second WW, and who died doing the right thing, would be remembered for his sacrifice, and would have his grave and tombstone well preserved and honored. If you go outside and catch the virus, and worst case scenario, get seriously sick and die, will you be remembered ten years from now, as someone who bravely went outside and fought the right battle against the coronavirus, and died for freedom?

Nobody is saying that everyone is gonna die. The point of this is to avoid being an unwitting spreader to those who are more vulnerable

Very good point, but will you be remembered in 10 years for staying inside under home "arrest" quarantine? Probably not, this is not a big battle, this is nothing but a VERY VERY bad flu. More people die every day from car accidents, should we ban driving? More people die every day from starvation, should we ban wasting food? People die, should we ban living? Should be ban freedom?

I'm sorry for playing devil's advocate with such a sensitive topic. I recently had a family member pass away (from natural causes thankfully) and am just in a bad mood. I'm off to bed now. Thanks for listening to me.

We do not live in a perfect world. Nobody should be expected to "house arrest" themselves for 3+ weeks!

It's depressing seeing people picking losing their freedom for which people have died for if they themselves fear death, pain or virus.
It's depressing seeing such an extreme ultimatum made up by those who don't understand how the world works.

Apple has announced: https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/14/cor...l-stores-outside-of-china-until-march-27.html

And there's a post office I visited which is pretty much in the middle of nowhere and yet.. it's going to close because of Coronavirus. Bruh, really? They've really gone deep in to the scaremongering by the media (it's all they ever talk about these days). Good thing the post office wasn't closed as I had a parcel to ship, and it was.

I'm pretty sure you live in London, the place where Covid19 is spreading much faster than the rest of the country. Social distancing is necessary to protect the vulnerable such as my parents and sister who are all in the 'at risk' groups.

I work in Local Government and we have been instructed to work from home for the next few months which is going to be hellish. No one wants to be stuck inside all-day for months at end and not do the activities and hobbies they enjoy. No one wants to close up shop for months and see a hit to their finances which is especially rough if you freelance or self-employed.

Covid19 isn't going to kill us all but can kill a considerable number of the population. It needs to be taken seriously to prevent killing the nation's grandparents and those with compromised immune systems. We're seeing a massive pressure on our limited health services and so many people are seeing their lives disrupted whether it be weddings, holidays and education.

I had no idea how many stupid persons where here, when you see how italia is having a bad time, how us France are going to take the same hit, and how espagna is getting hit hard, how stupid can you be... really, and how selfish it is to be like "I won't die, eh, who cares if I give the virus to someone legit could die from it, I don't care if it's not me".

I'm scared to live in the same world as theses people...

I agree.. It's unnerving to know that there are a lot of truly selfish people in this world.

All for measures being taken and prevention being taught to the plebs (in the unlikely event it sticks and does not all become old hat* the world will be a better place) but there is such a thing as too extreme and the measures taken thus far seem rather extreme for the lethality of it all, and compared to similar situations (of which we have had and continue to have plenty, no need to look back a century to Spanish flu or the like). Life has a value, high but far from infinite, and if you don't question whether you are at that limit or what that might be then I do have to wonder.

*HIV/aids and sexuality when that was kicking off and getting big is an interesting topic here, though equally it is far from a big worry today and that is still not cured or all that well managed. Not to mention if you want to talk about a proper big boy epidemic that would be it, and proper big boys (and girls) are also a bit of an epidemic these days by most definitions of the term.

On "if I killed someone" type logic:
I have friends that I would not hesitate to get up at 3am if I got the "bring a spade" call.
Do I run up to them, slap the fag out of their mouth, moderate their drinking to "just wine with dinner", I live in a reasonably civilised country so you don't have to pay up front for healthcare (include health insurance for them if you don't live in such a country, or maybe here if I want the bells and whistles approach rather than usually perfectly adequate) and set up an exercise regimen? Do I bollocks. Some of those I know will end them, and make it brutal before it ends. What changes here?

Nothing should be shut down. In order for society to run nothing should stop. Too many people are scared, too many people are lemmings. No one should be scared of death over their personal freedoms.

It shames me to live in this world anymore.
I agree with too many people being scared. But this isn't about people being scared. It's about the fact that if we do nothing it will spread at a rate so out of control that there won't be enough hospitals and staff to help those who need it (whether they are sick from coronavirus, or something else), leading to many unnecessary deaths. Hell, some places are already running into that problem. No one wants to be the one to make that decision and then get blamed for everyone who couldn't get the help they needed and died.

People shouldn't panic, but at the same time, people shouldn't be taking this too lightly.

We may not be able to stop the spread completely but we can at least slow it to a manageable rate.
In order to do that, extreme measures are needed. It worked for China, their numbers have been staying stable.

Individual "persons" should not need to do anything if they don't want to. It is the Governments job to keep the hospitals running. It was their job to be ready for emergencies. Not my fault if they drop the ball and people die.

It's not that simple. There already aren't enough hospitals for everyone that's getting sick, and they could build more, but that takes time. They would have to get equipment and doctors for the new hospitals, if equipment isn't available, more has to be manufactured, if doctors aren't available, more people need to go through medical education. All of that takes time, and the only way to buy more time is by slowing the spread.

If no one took any measures to slow the spread, each infected person would infect one more person every other day on average.
That might not sound like much, but it effectively means that every other day, the number of infected would double. After just 2 months, every person on the planet would be infected. How long do you think building hospitals, manufacturing equipment and training doctors takes? The governments can't make magic happen. That's why people need to take this seriously.

Is the will of a few worth effecting the will of many? People's livelihoods are being effected just so we can maybe save the old and immune-compromised. People who will die if they catch ANY flu. Also people just die, even more so in stressful situations. Causing this panic is going to cause those with mental health issues to die with increased panic attacks and suicide. This is a waste of time and money.

There are no more people than usual dying in Europe right now. It's just people finally seeing that people die.
