so if i have fat32 first , then i can use say wiiflow / wiimc etc to browse the ntfs part and fat32
I don't use them and only have a single fat32 partition anyway
But I think they both support fat32 and ntfs regardless of order
Best way for you to go ahead would probably be experimenting with some old usb stick
I think the point of having FAT32 first is that OTHER hombebrew that can only see FAT32 usually also can only see the FIRST partition so having the first partition as the one that's NTFS kinda defeats the purpose of having one partition in each format.

My external hard drive is 500gigabytes, so the easiest option was to have a 200gb FAT32 partition for WII games and leave a 300GB NTFS partition for everything else. Works like a charm!

I just re-partitioned my HDD a while ago. I have a 1TB Western Digital My Passport. I have a 100GB FAT32 Partition for Wii stuffs and a 900GB NTFS Partition for movies, music, Wii games and backups.

I'm going to consider this as being the definitive poll results.

Heh, don't let the long bar trick you. I see that more than half of the voters are using other file systems as pure FAT32. Either a combination of FAT32 and other file systems or completly other file systems. That means that non-FAT32 file systems are relevant for more than half of the voters. If we interpolate this we can tell that non-FAT32 file systems are relevant for ~half of GBAtemp's Wii community.

you're comparing FAT32 against non-FAT32, but when comparing FAT32 against any other individual filesystem the results are clear. And quite honestly, the poll results shouldn't mean anything to those knowledgeable in the Wii scene anyway.

I think my previous post said it best:

Reasons why I think FAT32 is the best:
  • uneek & uneek+di & sneek+di
  • HBC support
  • DML
  • supported by ALL apps, loaders and emulators
  • can be readused by Windows for other purposes
  • more stable write support than NTFS
  • ability to use "get data back" in the event of file corruptiondeletion
  • compatible with the PS3

The only disadvantage of FAT32 is the 4GB file size limit, which doesn't impact storing Wii games as they can be split. So this will only impact people who use their HDD to store large files not related to the wii at all (e.g. HD movies).

In my opinion, the only reasons why some people choose to not use FAT32 are:
  • do not know the above list of FAT32 pro's
  • do not know other filesystems are supported so they stick with WBFS partitions
  • too lazy\scared to convert from one filesystem to FAT32
  • cannot afford a HDD that is 100% dedicated to the Wii (e.g. HDD used to store HD movies for playback on a PC or some other media center)

So quite frankly, from my perspective it doesn't matter what the outcome of this poll is, FAT32 is the best filing system for Wii HDDs and always will be (e.g. we'll never see NTFS support for neek, not necessarily because it's impossible, but because no one with adequete knowledge cares to pursue it).

I think we can say nowadays that there is no advantage in using wbfs anymore.
So, basically, people still using it have no (good) excuse not to switch 2 fat32.
The same counts for people using wbfs together with fat32.

If you add those votes to fat32, it's more like a 75 / 25 percentage.

but seeing as the OP is askin what people use then thats an assuption.

Yeah and most people use only FAT32 than any other scheme.

I truly feel sorry for the two people that use NTFS+WBFS, I'm not sure I'd have admitted that.

Suggestion: change the poll to be a checkbox deal instead of a radio deal.
Also, add ext2/3/4 options. And HPFS for WODE users.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not going to do that. I have "Another partition type" that people can choose, and there is no point of using check boxes. But even if I thought your idea was a good one, it is still a little too late to go and start changing things up.

Im curious if HBC ever supports NTFS how many people would switch
I personally think the HBC should also support USB DVD drives. Even just being able to completely ignore them would be good but when I come from uLoader and leave the DVD reader connected it gives me a code dump. The newest HBC is a LITTLE better since is now only code dumps HALF the time. A lot of the rest of the time it successfully ignores it now but it also just kinda gets stuck sometimes.

Hell, I think HBC should support my USB floppy drive. Trust me, I tried. LOL

I'm concerned as to why you would need to use your floppy drive to store data? xD You should use that to read whatever "important data" you might have on a floppy disk from 10 years ago and tuck it back in your closet :P

Yeah, I was SOOOO hoping that it would have worked. I could always just try and hack my usb floppy drive so it gets seen as a mass storage device, but I'm not going to look that deep into it. Hell, there isn't much good homebrew that can fit on a floppy anyways.

But hey, on the thought about Dragon Quest with it using a USB drive, I wonder if there is a chance to find an exploit in the game that runs from USB so there is no need for an SD card, but it would be rather pointless bc you still need at least a 1gb SD card to make a nand dump with bootmii.
