Fallout 76 on PC will use Bethesda's own client, won't launch initially on Steam

fallout-76-tri-edition.jpg

Bethesda's upcoming online take on the Fallout series is releasing this year, and if you pre-ordered the game, you'll be able to access the beta test that's scheduled for early October. Though details are still bare, Bethesda announced something new through the FAQ page for the beta: Fallout 76's PC version will not be launching on Valve's Steam platform. It appears as though Bethesda wishes to push its own launcher, Bethesda.net, instead of using Steam. The reveal of this follows Epic Games' choice to forgo a popular distribution service, the Google Play Store, in order to take a larger cut of profits. It is stated that this only will affect users who buy the game at launch, and it's implied that Fallout 76 will be available on the service some time after release.

If you're a PC gamer, does this impact your choice to purchase the game? Do you prefer publishers using their own game launchers, rather than just Steam?

Consumer: Man, it's so good we have Steam and the Play Store. There's little to no hassle getting any game and you don't have to install anything separately.
Epic Games & Bethesda: Hold my beer.
Yes, Epic clearly suffers from their decision to avoid steam. Such unpopular games they make. As with Blizzard. They are in rags. Nobody wants to pay for their games anymore because they are not on steam.

i usually don't care, but this bloat really is starting to get out of hand, these companies do realize that ram is a limited resource yes? so having like 400 different launchers and DRM platforms is a bit of a waste...

can't wait to see places like humblebundle and g2a get their own launcher for whatever reason

to add insult to injury, the bethesda client was horribly made last time i used it and was a bitch to install without having it crash, so most of these one-off launchers are usually made terribly and just not worth anyone's time

Well, I didn't really like the sound of this game in the first place... Bummed me out that its gonna be rust/ark based... Not a fan of those games anymore. They become so toxic after a while... Hopefully they allow private servers... Not a fan of this separate client crap though. Never have been. Just throw everything on steam ffs.

Gonna try out the beta anyways, just gonna avoid preordering it.... Can't take another waste of $60 on a game I end up not playing...

While I find the change in attitude to be worth studying I still find it curious to see people touting steam as an incredibly useful concept. If people truly don't find the humble start button/folder of shortcuts to be useful and insist on adding something else between them and a game then surely the answer is to harass Steam to allow easy user made shortcuts to be added. Oh wait https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2219-YDJV-5557

Why would having more launchers bother your RAM? Do you not release unnecessary programs before running demanding things? Might bother some hard drive space but even then such a thing should pale in size compared to a single save on a complex game.

No, because consumers pay for memory and storage

personally, i'm not affected all that much, since i have 24GB ram in my system anyway, but i'm being mindful for those that only have 6gb or 8gb and are too lazy to close anything before launching their games
in the past back when i had a fairly low end laptop having steam open alone made it hard to play anything since it would take up more resources than it needed to

also steam itself isn't too light on ram either, since it's built off chrome and uses on average about 300MB and usually more

just because people can buy games that are heavily discounted doesn't mean they can afford upgrades to their hardware
especially since bitcoin inflated prices recently all around

If you aren't going to take trivial steps to improve your experience that every guide has done... actually since before multitasking became a thing (streamlined boot discs were common) then I am not sure why I should care.

I would have thought the market for Fallouts and Elder Scrolls are both fairly keen (and likely have a fair bit of overlap as well, certainly for me the same thing that sees me want to play elder scrolls games is the same thing that sees me want to play fallout titles).
Single player sure, however I get why multiplayer is so enticing to devs.
Steam? I will debate that one heavily. Indeed I would probably say people wanting steam is somewhat like battered wife syndrome.

I like the quiet aspect of fallout and skyrim. I can do whatever I want without someone going out of their way to ruing it. I'd rather not have multiplayer at all. Ark ruined that type of aspect for me.. Toxic Toxic Toxic. Like I said earlier, they better have private servers or its a no go for me.

The steam thing. I like having all of my games on one account. Its just annoying to have them all open. I have the ram for it though. Just sucks to have fortnites launcher, bethesda launcher, and the blizzard launcher just for one game each. Its stupid. But I just add the games to my "library" via .exe so its whatever at this point.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Good. Steam needs to be put in its place.
Why? Did steam kill your family or something? Its an amazing client. Hate it all you want. Millions of people love it

Millions of people love a DRM scheme? Seems like a basis for a "Stop the world. I am getting off." type comment. As for the "I like having all of my games on one account. Its just annoying to have them all open. " then as others mentioned is this not why we have the start bar or folders we can put shortcuts into? Already built into every OS and generally regarded as fantastic at what it does. Why run any extraneous stuff at all?

Not by some shitty Bethesda DRM that's for sure.
While I don't disagree I dare say we would both agree that Fortnite does not represent the pinnacle of games and it seems to be seriously worrying google's stuff at this point. I would love for some better service to come along and compete on quality

Man, if I actually cared about the game, I'd be upset, too. Online-only games can suck it.

Wow, didn't know Steam's rudimentary DRM killed someone close to you in their sleep.

You make variations of this argument frequently in discussions like this and the response will have to be the same. If you want to only consider things as they apply to you then OK, generally though if we are considering the implications of technical or ethical decisions it really pays to look at the wider context.

Equally that it is a DRM system that people seem to have grown fond of and consider almost essential is truly fucking disturbing to me.

it's not denuvo, it's acceptable, hence why so many don't really care about it being in the way

I would maintain it is above and beyond what is necessary, furthermore it obstructing the ability to resell games and buy games resold from others (something which happened all the time back in the day). It is then why I make comments like battered wife syndrome -- people have learned to accept nastiness as baseline good under the notion that "it could be worse" and that does not sit right with me.
