Hardware External USB Hard Drive causing Wii video disturbance...

Everytime I plug my external hard drive into the Wii via USB it makes the screen go a little fuzzy. Like scrolling artifacts going across the TV screen.

The Hard Drive doesn't have to be 'on' to cause this, just plugged in the USB...

What could be causing this?

no idea, but i would try plugging in a different hard drive to see if the problem is just a non compatible usb hard drive

That's... Really odd...
Maybe a interference between the connections?

I've found that by having my power brick too close to my component cables (Nintendo), I get distortion on the screen.

Obviously put as much distance between any electronic device and your video cables as you can and see what happens.

I've tried it with a different enclosure and got the same thing. Weird.

It's only when I plug the USB in so it's not the power brick (but I did move it to make sure anyway).

Next thing to try would be different USB cable I think.

I have the same problem and there's no solution on google.com and no one knows how to fix it!

I force to use a usb drive stick to load games off hdd without video problems.

Tried:

Different USB cable.
Different External HDD enclosure.
Moving power brick of the HDD (and the Wii just to make sure).

does your hdd get power from the usb port of the wii? why not try a hdd with an independent power source; like a hdd with an adaptor.

try putting the AC adaptor on an extension lead on another circuit that should solve your problem

you said it right. cheap ones crashes faster and eventually causes some unexpected problems.

It is powered by a seperate plug, not from the Wii.

Its just an enclosure, there is a decent name brand hard drive inside (seagate barracuda), or doesn't that matter?

TBH these enclosures to me are all the same I mean whats in an enclosure a metal case, a hard disk drive, and a pcb board and some cables thats all, IMHO I would say for inerference it has very little to do with the actual enclosure or drive and the culprit is the AC adaptor, I am no electiciain but it has to do with sign waves on the same circuit as the tv, decent AC adaptor will give minimal interference, now a cheap and nasty one like the one I got screwed up my tv, but the AC adaptor was terrible it couldnt even power up the drive properly, on another circuit no distrotion.

also if it was a shielding issue you would see warping across the screen, the disturbance I saw was little groups of lines randmoly going across the screen and in big groups too

so for those type of people who would want to use their own hdd, I would say invest in a good AC adaptor if you can find them, althogh the name brand enclosures have the good AC adaptors with them :/

Wii don't like cheap old external cases.

Best to buy a name brand external case like mybook or a 2.5 external drive that don't use too much power.

Cheap cases suck up too much power and mess up the wii video.
