I made this a few weeks ago to see if I would like a rechargeable, backlit GBA. Didn't want to wreck the GBA case, didn't care about the grip.
I also didn't want to screw up my option to just use AA. So I managed to stuff a 2000 maH battery, Adafruit USB charging board and Adafruit 3v3 buck converter in. These parts were not cheap, but I wanted to avoid doing things like charging lipos in parallel with dodgey hardware. I don't know my ass from my elbow about power supplies but I've heard charging lipos can be hazardous.....
Now, with the new backlit screen, GBA battery life is still fantastic even with only a couple of NiMH. (There is a "This Does Not Compute" video showing a GBA with backlit screen running for an insanely long time on just AA batteries.)
Nevertheless, I find myself using the grip at home and AAs when away. And it was fun to make.
