Exclusive footage of upcoming Anbernic RG351 console

I recently reviewed Anbernic’s latest handheld, the RG350P. It is quite impressive on the hardware design aspect and plays all games I threw at it on the emulators it claims to support. However, these end up at the original PlayStation as it reaches the limits of the JZ4770 CPU. So how about emulating past the PS1 and emulating N64 and dreamcast games, as well as PSP? That’s what’s possible with the RK3326 CPU.

The next generation of these open-source handhelds appear to increasingly adopt this RK3326 CPU, with the Odroid Go Advance (OGA) often cited as the reference. Anbernic’s next device has also been reported to use this CPU but little else is officially known about the device. Today, I am ready to share some exclusive and official footage, as well as pictures, of Anbernic’s next handheld, the RG351:

While the footage and pictures do not show the device in use, my contact told me that it’s a unit that’s close to a retail one, and it seems like the RG351’s design is taking a lot from the RG350P that I reviewed. What’s missing is an HDMI port but that’s not much of a bummer personally as the appeal is mostly on-the-go gaming with these devices. I also notice that there’s only one microSD card slot, which suggests that the device has some sort of internal memory, rather than a dedicated microSD for that (which felt like an odd decision when I reviewed the RG350P and the New PocketGo V2).

I also notice that to adjust the volume, there’s a volume control wheel rather than buttons. This is a plus personally, and also adds some nostalgic flair to it.

It sports the same button layout as the RG350P and a screen size of 480x320, which is great for GBA games but I’m mostly interested to see how PSP emulation performs on it. My contact is also quick to point out that the RG351 is not an OGA clone. Given Anbernic’s track record in the retro handheld scene, I’m looking forward to what they offer with the RG351’s software and how they set themselves apart from other RK3326 console makers.

Regarding a release date, no specific one is officially available but my contact said to expect its release to be “close”. But no details about pricing was mentioned.

What do you think of the RG51 so far? What features would you like to see in it?

I only hope the buttons are better, I had one RG350 and it was very good, only the buttons could be better... they are kinda hard to press, they should be softer, like, less effort to press.

I got one OGA BE and maybe I'll sell to get this RG351. But the OGA has amazing battery life.

350m looks way better, it has a metal shell. Looks like they went with plastic again. They also removed the HDMI port. This looks more of a step back than forward.

Definitely monitoring this closely. I've been thinking about picking up an RG350P for awhile now, it's good thing I caught wind of the RG351 just in time

I Dunno why they keep pumping these handhelds out in 2020 when any cheap android phone could do better ................. these would have been the SH*T in the 90's but these days ..Mehh no point

Phones still don't have those fancy buttons attached and personally I'm not quite comfortable with carrying my regular PS4 or Xbone controller with me in case I want to get gaming on my phone.

Sweet. Looking forward to this one. I'll miss the HDMI port. But unless the HDMI port opened up the realm for two player, probably won't matter much.

Hope the price is friendly and that it has a headphones jack lol.

Psp n64 Dreamcast is crazy.

I am most interested in the Nintendo 64 and the Dreamcast emulation since I have both a PSP and a Vita so I can just play the PSP games on either of them.

Are those 3ds-like joysticks? I always liked that sliding joystick design. The one in the previous review (350?) looks like it has joycon type joysticks, which may have the same drift issue.

n64/DC/PSP emu is cool to finally have in these types of handhelds.

Still, it doesn't appeal to me. If a handheld for OG Xbox, ps2, gamecube comes out one day.. I might buy that. (Thinking about it, GDPwin is probably the answer to this already.)

There are, but they often have compatibility issues, are bulky as heck, aren't comfy to use, and kinda make you look like a dork. I'm yet to see legitimately portable (as in, "easy to grab from pocket/bag and put it back in minimal time") controller option for the phones.
