This is primarily a gaming site filled with gaming discussion. While there is a politics-specific forum, I don't believe it should be included in the "All" category of the "Recent Content" feed.

Many users wish to keep their political ideas separate from their hobbies, and others wish to ignore politics altogether. Also, gaming provides a means of escapism for many from the stressors of real life and politics, and I'm sure they wouldn't want to be reminded of current affairs.

Lastly, there are often explicit or troubling topics that may offend or cause discomfort to users, and their inclusion in the front-page "All" tab is in display to all users (many of whom are children).

I wouldn't mind it in the all category if it was reasonably moderated...

I agree with you, reading about politics and certain non gaming news just makes me depressed. I'm glad I get to escape all that bs for a while when playing or discussing games.

Also, political discussion often turns toxic, I don't need that, it ruins my mood. Usually I tend to ignore political topics altogether.

It's perfectly fine that the option to discuss politics is there, but it doesn't have to appear in the "All" tab, if you ask me.

Yeah, as long as people can still discuss it, we should keep it out of the all tab.
There are some really neat people I've met, that I don't agree with but still really appreciate as a person.
Instead of fighting over stupid crap we can unite over, well gameboys :D

We'll become the independent GBA party, how about that?

While not one that's applied to everyone, in case you didn't know you can set this for yourself by adding the section to the Exclusions in the New Content Preferences, which affects the "All" tab.
I myself have that sub-forum excluded (As well as some others) and forget that it exists at all for long periods of time.

Indeed. Entirely too many of the replies posted there belong in the EOF, if anywhere at all. Admittedly, I'd even include some of my own replies in that category. The modern political landscape is divisive enough on its own without bringing low-effort trolling and ad hominem attacks into the mix.

Good that it's already an option, but I also agree with @IncredulousP that it should be hidden by default.

If you want to ignore it (shame really but you do you and all that) and the means mentioned above provided are not enough then why not ignore it like I do questions about R4s I don't have/know anything about (keep on scrolling and all that)?

Personally I don't want to, but I don't want people to have to see it by default. In other words, I think it should be opt-in, not opt-out. It's not a shame if you come to a videogame website and expect to see videogame related topics, and not politics. There are many, much better and more appropriate places on the internet to see and discuss politics.

To add to that, it also crowds the "Recent Content" tab often causing more important/interesting threads to go unnoticed since there can only be a finite amount of threads shown at any time...

Some of the members here that want to keep their gaming hobbies separate from politics could stop spending most of their time posting in politics. And if some individuals would use the report button for appropriate posts rather than those they simply disagree with, moderation in that heavily used sub-forum would be more efficient.

The only time I would condone opt in around here is for competitions or something of that nature where almost inevitably pointless discussion for most people gets generated.

Why would a computer game website be expected to not have some discussion of politics? There certainly can be those sites without it but what would make you think this is one where that does not happen?

How about the fact temp has existed for over a decade just fine without that section whatsoever? If YOU want politics, fine, but some people are only here for the games and for news on exploit development among other things, not to watch idiots arguing over who's better between a giant douche and turd sandwich... Many users are kids on top of that, so no reason to push politics on them, thus it's something that should be opt-in, YOUR experience won't change whatsoever.

Right, so you are saying that it is reasonable to expect those who want to indulge would be inclined to seek it out.

Frankly I don't see what this has to do with the presence of political content in the "All" tab of the "Recent Content" feed. Additionally, the use of the word 'could' hints at some sort of blame or finger pointing, quite unbefitting of a mod if you ask me. Plus it doesn't make much sense; if someone posted on politics, then they wouldn't be "keeping their gaming hobbies separate from politics."

Didn't have the section. Had plenty of topics that would make up the section, which was part of the reason for the section's creation. Do we have to do one of my lists?

"think of the children" you say... we have long had discussions on things that some would say children should not see. That said since when are children not supposed to come into contact with politics? The sex and drugs and rock and roll (linky) thing I don't necessarily agree with but has some established stuff. Indeed politics is broadcast all day long, during peak TV hours, is available on every newspaper...

So some people are only here for hacks and games. So be it. They can disable sections if they are so inclined, or go to another site discussing hacks and games if it is so distressing. By similar token do we have to block people with an abysmal understanding of intellectual property law (or just an opinion that does not resemble the law -- see all the fan game smackdown threads), that opt to use cheats on their games (or indeed consider using cheats as a bad thing)?

I didn't know about the option to hide sections from the all tab, that works for me.

Which is ironic because you had to visit a post about "excluding world news and politics from the all tab". Maybe if we keep this as the top post at all times, it will demystify any and all confusion.

I think the more important issue at hand is how can we make this place more like reddit. Why specialize in one thing when we can specialize in everything?
