The prize money will help out the bailout fund a bit. Also the Daily Fail and Express are seething!

Hopefully Angela Merkel gets the money and finally builds her ironman-like suite and saves the euro from saudi arabia & the americans.

How can they accept their Peace prize when they will soon be... in pieces? *Insert evil laughter here*

Seriously though, I can definitely get behind the justification. Say what you want about the EU's money troubles, but the vision of unifying a once warring continent under the same banner is an admirable ideal. It's going through a rough patch now, but if it can pull through, it may very well have a bright future ahead of it.

I agree. The one thing I want to see the most when it comes to this planet is a global government. The EU has been a great "first step" and I believe that they deserve the award. Maybe this gesture can get the people of the EU to come back together and try to find common cause regardless of their economic problems. Our jokes aside, for those of you living in the EU, the world is rooting for you. :)

The prize is $1.2 million, that wont help bailouts which are in the billions one bit. The peace prize has been a complete joke ever since they awarded it to Obama in 2009 after being in office for two weeks. This makes it a bigger joke, the EU if you want to consider it an organisation engages in military operations constantly outside of its borders. Sure there may not be any military conflicts amongst its members but they still go and get involved in other conflicts and drop bombs on other countries at the drop of a hat with their fellow peace prize recipient Obama.

I know. *giggle* I was just trying to make the point that,it feels odd that the EU gets a cash prize (during their economic struggle) while under the guise of a "peace award". The EU deserves the award for the reason stated but it still seems a bit fishy ;)

Because the EU is an organisation? Or because you don't agree with the peace part? If the later then you can't really say Obama really deserved one as fast as he did. =S

Greece's debt is around 300 million euro. Ireland got around 85 billion from the IMF and EU for their bailout. $1.2 million isn't going to do jack shit. The Nobel prize has nothing to do money but rather an attempt to give the EU as an organisation a "vote of confidence," to attempt the politiccal positives of European Integration during a time when the EU has been going through a period of lacking a cohesive vision and the Sovereign debt crisis. The problems of the Euro is certainly key but it has to be remembered there were already tensions building before Global financial crisis. Most notably the referendums on the EU Constitution in the mid 2000s by the French and Dutch electorate. France wasn't a surprise but the Netherlands is usually been regarded as pro-integration hence their rejection was significant.

Not entirely sure what the EU did to preserve peace in the region - from what I noticed, eastern europe is under constant pressure from Russia, especially in the context of the Anti-Missile umbrella system the U.S wanted to install here, and the EU did very little to ease up the situation. The crisis is pretty much over, but still.

Greece's debt is well in excess of 300 billion Euros, not 300 million.
