    here
I have a $50 Future Shop gift card from redeemed Air Miles, and I can't decide what to get. I'm kinda leaning towards EO4 because they have the box set with the extra stuff, but I've never actually played a Etrian Odyssey game before.

I'm open to other suggestions as well, even for things beside 3DS games, except eShop, don't want to update just yet.

BTW, I'm also in the middle of Fire Emblem: Awakening and Kid Icarus Uprising as well, 3DS-wise

I have played neither, Etrian Odyssey is a well made game, have high scoring reviews. I wouldn't say go for it, but consider it a choice and checkout the gameplay.

Monster Hunter on the other hand....umm I passed upon it. Played the demo, didn't like it. Not a fan personally. It's still a great game for the lovers out there.

They're two completely different style of games, it's possible you won't like either. I recommend EO4 unless you have buddies who get together all the time to play MH3, then that might be the better game, maybe. Pretty much old school dungeon crawler vs. hack n slash as you slaughter draconic creatures to improve your weapon/armor, helping you fight even stronger dragons.

    EO4.

If you want MH3U get it on Wii U. 3DS can only do local multiplayer.

you should probably check out some reviews and gameplay videos before. or if you have access, at least give one of the other EO games a spin first, just to see if you like it at all.

thing is, while EO has great customizations for your party, its also full of repetition, lacks character depth and story, and you can also screw your characters pretty easily, simply because you have every option to screw them up.
now, i haven't actually played the 4th game, but since they didnt change things in the first 3 games, i guess these things are still the way they were.
you'll have to use some kind of guide to make a party that wont force you to grind even more than you would have to with an actually thought out and strategically good party.

monster hunter on the other hand, while looking cool and being a great hit over in japan where you just have to throw a stone to find anyone who'd go and play multiplayer with you, has its downsides too.
its a slow game. its more of a strategic game, than an action game in my eyes. you'll spend hours collecting items by beating the same things over and over, selling items or build traps, roasting food, getting all the potions and armors you need to stand a chance against all those cool monsters. combat, if it didnt change all too much from wiis monster hunter tri, is kinda weird. i cant put my finger on it, but it just feels unnatural. theres a rather limited amount of maps too, you'll be revisiting the same places over and over and over. you'll be doing tons of micromanagement, meaning you'll spend lots of time just to search for the right items in your inventory and the item chest, so you can carry them to a smith or to whoever wants something from you.

both of these games are extremely acquired tastes. and you shouldn't just blindly buy either one of them.
so my advice would be, for EO, to aquire one of the first three games and play them for lets say an hour. see if you're into it at all.
and for MH, go on youtube, look for a nice video (look for some random lets play footage so you see what happens between all the cool giant monsters), and see if you even want to try this game afterwards.

mh3u, if you get into it, can give you several hundred hours of challenging, fun gameplay. it's great if your favorite part of games is the boss battle. don't expect a story there, though.

Mother fucking Monster Hunter (As long as you don't have a Wii U)
The amount of content in this game is so fucking much it will last you over 300 hours, the game is very addicting, the controls take some getting used to but the lock on camera works and they're very customizable, plus the game has great local multiplayer and some pretty rad fights.
I'm a bit biased since I'm a huge MonHun fan, but the game is truly a lot of fun for those willing to sink time into it, and there's a reason why a lot of people bought a 3DS for this thing.
EO4 is pretty cool though, also worth your money (albeit with much less content), and 1st person dungeon crawlers are a ton of fun, but if you aren't a fan of old Wizardry(-esque) games and don't enjoy drawing maps, you'll miss a portion of this game's main draw.
Honestly they're both great games if you don't mind the difficulty, and both have demos to get you to know them (Though the MH3U demo is god-awful and only a series veteran could enjoy it, since it tells you nothing about the main draws of the game)
Also, >not manning up and playing MH solo

This is an odd choice because both games have very simular selling points but are vastly different games.

I Pick Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate because i forgot how fun this game is and having it portable on a console that has a decent analoge (damn you psp) is great!

I will say one thing tho. If you havent played an EO game before then you might find it hard to get into, its one of those games that you either love or hate. There is no in-between and it wont get better the more you play, so if you dont like it at the start, you wont like it period.

Both games have a demo tho i think? So play both demo's and see what you prefer.

Monster hunter if you have never played it before... or get it on Wii U like other people are saying but if you've played it then go get EO4 but I warn you it could get boring...
