I have never backed up a ds game before and I was just wondering if this guide is still applicable?

Also, in order to have it get a Scene Release,
it should be dumped by a program called Wooddumper (?).
I'd recommend using that instead of the one mentioned in the guide you posted.

I can confirm that guide will work as it is almost exactly the way I dumped a game yesterday when I was testing. I'm still new to the scene though so I'm not sure about wooddumper.

Is it any good? how import friendly is it?

If by 'import friendly' you mean you don't know Japanese, I'd say it's really import-friendly BUT you'll be missing out on the story. And the story includes like 5 hours worth of cutscenes that you can't skip. I mean I ended up getting Metal Gear syndrome where I only payed attention to the story for the first 25 hours, then I just ignored them and did something else every time a cutscene came on hahaha.

I don't have it yet but I will pass by a gamestop that has a few copies when I go to class later today. If there isn't an official dump in about 7 hours from now I plan on trying. I don't get out of class till then (stupid saturday classes).

I was swearing, Bart style from the Simpsons. I was hoping for a proper release when I got up this morning.

I've starting playing the Japanese release, but since I can barely read Kanji it's a bit of a struggle. It took me a while to realize for instance that reviving is done at the inn now instead of the hospital, like in the first two games.

Ah, I see. :3

But, please. If I can get to the Second Stratum Boss in Japanese,

Third Stratum was excellent. I want to begin from either that one, or from the Second Stratum (*Gasp* so beautiful!).
