I already posted this question to tomshardware but haven't gotten any answers so although gbatemp isn't super computer-concentrated, posting this here in case anyone can help.

So I updated to Windows 10 yesterday and after a few quirks I got it to running as normal, or so I thought. I use an Ethernet cable to connect to the Internet but all I get when I diagnose is "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration". It used to work fine before updating by the way. This is what I've tried

  • Restarted the computer
  • Turned off the computer, waited a few hours, then turned it on again
  • Unchecked IPv6
  • Re-installed the LAN driver
  • Tried a different ethernet cable
  • Tried to follow the tutorial (http://bit.ly/1P9RPJI) on the tomshardware site for Windows 8 for this issue but when I type ipconfig /release, it tells me that "an error occurred: an address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint"
Another funny thing I've noticed, when I enable the Ethernet connection, my computer skyrockets to exceedingly high temperatures (over 99C according to the monitor I have). When I disable it or disconnect it it goes back down to normal. Not exactly sure why this is happening.
Any help would be much appreciated, I know this type of question has been posted tons of times before but I've been spending my entire morning reading them and nothing has worked

. Sorry for the super long post.
EDIT: played around with it some more. Looks like the temperature only rises when I check IPv6

Type these commands into the CMD as admin

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
exit

hope this resolves the issue

Unfortunately when it comes to ipconfig /release it gives me this error "an error occurred while releasing interface ethernet: an address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint."

If you have a separate drive try installing windows 7 and see if its working if not the network adapter is dead, if it does work the adapter is not supported by windows 10 or the driver is incompatible.

Also what browser are you using?

Another thing you should try is factory resetting your router/gateway/modem since it sounds like the default ip configuration is messed up. can you connect to it? try going to 10.0.0.6 or 192.168.100.1 through your browser

Just a standard netgear router
Well that doesnt help im talking about model number like give more details is there a sticker somewhere on it saying what the default gateway address is and are you sure you dont have anything else? Like the cable line the runs from outside goes right to this router?

I have this exact router sitting next to me dusty as all hell (I don't use it anymore since it ancient) reset it by holding the small button on the back (it looks like a hole next to the antenna) with a toothpick or pen for 30 sec if that does not work find your modem or gateway not this router and unplug it for 2 min then plug it back in tell me what happens after you do this.

Also try connecting directly to your modem/gateway not this little router

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Windows 10 doesn't like your network adapter.

Have you tried installing the drivers for your network adapter? chances are it's a realtek.

*EDIT* By the way if you have a spare USB you can download Linux (Linux Mint is recommended) and run a live CD from there. You won't install anything and you can test your hardware.

It is a realtek! and yes that is one of the first things I did, I uninstalled the drivers and installed the appropriate driver for my mobo. Since then I have rolled back the drivers hoping that would do the trick.

Tbh I don't know that much about linux. I have a couple of spare USBs, how would it not install anything?

At this point I'm considering just downgrading to Windows 7 and hoping that will work. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Did both, none worked :(. Weirdly enough, when I typed ipconfig in cmd, there was a blank space when it came to default gateway. Not sure why :l
seriously find your gateway/modem and connect to it directly or do you not know where it is or what it looks like?

I did!! I disconnected it from the router and plugged it into the modem. My modem is right near my router. It just didn't work.
and you reset it by unplugging it right? if it still does not work its like I said either your network adapter is dying/dead or the hardware/driver is old and does not support windows 10 yet (you could always try installing windows 10 again).

I reset it by unplugging it and also pressing the reset button.

EDIT: according to my mobo site it says its "windows 10 ready" and the drivers are updated. I've only had it for a little over a year. https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/B85MG/

LiveCD (its called LiveUSB on a USB drive) is a feature that lets you run Linux without ever installing anything. It just lets you try Linux. It is what it is. You can choose to install Linux later on if you want but it's completely optional.

The only other option I would recommend is setting the IP address manually.
