Can anyone tell me what type of rechargeable battery the original EFA-Linker uses? I bought a vl-2020, but I need to make sure it's right before putting it in.

I don't know if things changed during later batches or anything.
Hopefully you got one with tabs already welded on in a suitable location.

However you can usually figure out if something will be compatible.

The numbers refer more to the size of the cell itself ( https://www.batteriesandbutter.com/coin_batttery_chart.html ) and thus you can measure the size of the existing one/slot it went into/size on a picture if you have to and get an idea.
Larger battery = more stuff you can fit in it and thus more chemical to store energy and in the extremes more power it could deliver at full load which your little "keep the data in the save chip" battery is likely never to even come within sniffing distance of. Some even see if they can get away with a larger one still.

There can be a variation in voltage (some of the smallest things might be 1.5V where bigger stuff might be 3V). In this case if you find the save chip's datasheet you could then figure out if the keep alive voltage is high enough from a battery in normal use (if the 1.5 drops to 1.2 in short order/during normal discharge then yeah, and I very much doubt a GBA era flash cart used any of the fun DC-DC conversion we have today when they could have just used a battery).
