EA's upcoming games will offer a free upgrade to run on next-gen hardware

With the month of May having just arrived, quarterly financial briefings are ringing out across the gaming industry. One such company is Electronic Arts, which has just published its Q4 results. During the earnings call involving those financial results, EA's COO--Blake Jorgensen--told shareholders that "this year the phasing includes the effect of revenue recognition from the games we are launching for the current generation of consoles that can also be upgraded for free for the next generation."

That statement implies that EA will be offering, much like other game publishers such as CD Projekt Red, free upgrades to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions of their upcoming 2020 PlayStation 4 and Xbox One games lineup. We know for certain that Xbox titles will offer this ability, through Microsoft's Smart Delivery feature, but whether or not this will also be available on the PlayStation 5 is another question that has yet to be answered.

All I want is the ability to unplug external hdd/ssd from xbox one and plug it to Xbox Series X and play them all without redownloading.

That's exactly how it works for Xbox One games on the Series X, you can just move the hard drive from the Xbox One to the Series X without having to re-download. Any game that is Series X enhanced will require an update but the rest will play just fine.

With how common the "late gen remake on next gen" games were on Xbox One and PS4, it really pleases me to see this slowly becoming the standard for console games.
I think it's a bad idea since we're seeing the same s*** all over again just with better graphics and NOT something new and original

Another typical EA move... this will be the norm for the upcoming gen: EA is just trying to get a couple of brownie points in by saying it first..

They have also put in a pathetic SSD in their machine.

At first I thought that PS5 will be worse because of the slightly less powerful GPU. But the cutting edge SSD in the PS5 is a literal game changer (it is over twice as fast as Series X's horrid slow one). There is no SSD available at the moment for the PC market that is as fast as the PS5s. I really want to get my hands on a PS5.
What nonsense.... (in fact there's a couple of posts on this thread from you with similar tosh in them) - check the architecture of the console(s) as a whole - digital foundry yt videos would be a good start - and you'll see the actual difference between the 2 machines for transfer/access is more like about 10% in the PS5's favour - certainly no 'game changer'. Just like the extra raw power the Series X will have, the difference will be hardly noticeable - both machines will do pretty much the same thing: PS5 might load a game/new level up 1 second faster, whilst Series X might give you a slight res boost/better framerate.
The 2 consoles will be closer than PS4-XO is, and both will offer 'a literal game changer' over current gen in load speeds (and CPU performance), and will in turn improve PC games no end too (most games, especially AAA, target consoles - current case: PS4 - as the entry point for the game)

You're making stuff up. So, I am not going to bother replying to you more in this thread.

Uh...it's just a little faster than my M.2 NVMe, right? That's not necessarily "OMG, GET THIS NOW!" levels of atteactability to the idea for me atm.
PS5 is 5500 MB per second. It is a must-have.

I was wondering this the other day. Microsoft have stated this is a feature, but how long do we have to wait to find out details.

Are all games included, or developer specific? the latter being a nightmare really.

Whilst CDProjectRed and some other devs will be offering actual next gen games, I wouldn't bother with EA.

This gen will likely be the usual copy paste, buying the next gens will just be upscaled,. They're notorious for putting little effort in, next gen version is likely just slightly tweaked graphics.

This was my first thought too.

I haven't read the entire thread, but read your reply, I agree with this too. This coming gen will be closer than present. SSD will allow Sony to market as faster with no specifics, or build a game around hammering the storage, so they can inflate the statistics, to make the benefits seem worthwhile.

Despite this I feel both systems will be on par. Microsoft have the better package, in terms of services offered and value, I just hope those 15 studios they've been hording can complete with Sony on exclusives. One thing I've never been a fan of is there own games.

I liked the first Halo, but none of the others, I detest Gears of War, but appreciate others love it (I find it bland, linear and repetitive). Even the newer games I'm not fond of, State of Decay, appealed to me, but it's meh (personally) and I'm not keen on Sea of Thieves. At least they bought a few indies with good games, hopefully they don't EA them (a few year back Microsoft were).

Good ole EA, never disappoints! Here's the catch:

"EA, meanwhile, has also announced it will be offering a free next-gen upgrade for Madden NFL 21, but it appears to be taking a different tack to other publishers; rather than providing the ability to upgrade to the Xbox Series X version at any time through Smart Delivery, the publisher is restricting upgrades to a limited window.

To qualify for its offering, you'll need to purchase the Xbox One version of Madden NFL 21 by 31st December this year and your Xbox Series X upgrade must be completed by 31st March 2021, otherwise you'll be forced to do the classic double dip dance instead."

The list of games mentioned (and shown yesterday) by various other publishers including Ubisoft, Codies, Sega, Namco will basically just work off the bat via Smart Delivery: EA? Well, read the bold bit of the quote...
...Do they ENJOY acting like a set of arseholes? I'm quite sure they buy themselves a little trophy for their cabinet everytime they win the Worst Company in America award

Nice to see EA doing something good!, Hope they don't have a timeframe for being able to take advantage of the cross-buy.

I can't remember exactly but smart delivery might only be limited to the first two years.

I am pretty sure Microsoft has asked devs to make sure all game releases for Series X the first 2 years that it is out... that they are also released on Xbox One.

Shit shit. Bad tech, bad graphics. Shame on MS.
SSD/HDD or in another words "STORAGE" cant be more important than a powerful GPU and even CPU, NEVER. There is not many difference between fast SATA-AHCI SSDs and for example NVMe - PCI-e SSDs in real time scenarios.... hell most for example Windows users or should I see most of the time you wont notice much difference because most application and even games actually dont (still) need that much Bandwidth all the time. Faster SSDs wont give you magically more frames per second in games, games wont look better etc.

Sure, better boot-up times, loading times and multitasking including probably faster switching back and forth from one game to another (the new Series X and PS5 features) is what you can expect..... but not much else.

No more pop in, seamless experiences (no loading)

PS5 SSD can take gaming to an honestly new level I hope, in terms of PS5 exclusives.
