I just won an E71 360 off of eBay for $30, shipped. I've looked into this error, though have never actually experienced it myself. What is the likelihood that this will be fixable by holding in sync while booting to clear the failed update? If not, I've also heard that it could be caused by a cold joint under the SB, or bridged solder under the SB. Likelihood of that, too then?

And if nothing else, if it was a bad NAND flash during the update, is it something that would be fixable with a progskeet? I don't have any of the keys for the console (I don't know what kind of keys there are besides the drive keys), but to my knowledge everything, including the drive, is intact.

Edit - for what it's worth, here's the auction - http://www.ebay.com/itm/290700501159?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_500wt_1156

First thing is to check the solder joints.

Clean the console and let it heat up for a while.
Then boot it.

Fixing a bad NAND is pretty much near impossible.

Should I just heat gun it? I've had success with that on E74/3RROD systems.

And why is it near impossible? Is the NAND encrypted with keys only possible to get during successful system operation, or is it something else?

Edit - and if absolutely nothing else, I could always spoof this drive as another one with a different drive's keys, right?

Heatgun can work yes.

Clearing a failed update can be simple by updating it to a higher dash.

However if the NAND is corrupted then you're screwed.
The NAND is encrypted with the CPU Key and that isn't readable (only via RGHing but you need a good NAND image for that so it's out of the question)

Yep.
You can pull out the drive and spoof keys.
No worries there.
Spoofing the OSIG is a bad idea since that's detectable on XBLive.

OSIG?

Well I'll probably gun it then, so long as it is opened. If it's not open, I'll check the warranty status, though I am very doubtful that either of those will be true.

How would you update to a higher dash if it's booting straight to E71? What would cause an update to fail but not cause a corrupted NAND, and what would cause a corrupted NAND in the first place?

I hope I'm not bothering you with too many questions :X

If nothing else, $30 for a drive isn't terrible, I'm sure it'll be useful at some point.

OSIG is the signature of the drive, contains info about the manufacturer and drive type and AP2.5 capable and such.

It first checks for any updates iirc.
Then it applies them.
This is true for sane NANDs tho.

NAND corruption can be caused by anything.
Bad NAND.
To many bad blocks.
I'm sure that DeadlyFoez knows more about NANDs then I do ;p

30 bucks for a DVD drive isn't bad.
You can mod the case and sell it.
You can pry off the heatsinks and sell them
Sell the powerbrick + AV cables and such.
You can sell the fanduct.

Pretty good deal all together for parts.

Before you replied, I actually looked up a bit about OSIG. From what I read, on RGH consoles, you could edit and reflash the NAND to expect a different OSIG? (Another thing I haven't even thought about until just now - if you take the RGH board off of the console, does it become Live-Safe again? If so, could you make the Xbox expect a different OSIG (if that's possible like I gather from what I read), remove the RGH board, and then use it on Live? Just a noob thought.)

So, whenever this thing comes, what is going to by my course of action? See if sync-clear works, if not - reflow, and if not that, then... it's toast?

Nope.

Stock NANDs won't accept any other drive then that drive + key which is paired to the 360.
Hacked NANDs have a broken signature and require a hacked console to run on.
Even NANDs which have a modded KV (KeyVault which contains the Keys + OSIG etc)

Once you modify only a single bit in your NAND you'll have to use either jTAG wires (7471 or lower) or RGH to use it.

If Sync-clear works then you can pat yourself on the shoulder.
Darn good find then.

Reflow and it works.
Hey it's still a cheap 360.

If that doesn't work.
Scrap it and sell the parts.
Do a pretty casemod and sell the case.
That alone can bring up a pretty penny.

You're welcome ;]

Oh I'd also suggest downloading atleast 14699 and extract the $systemupdate folder to the root of an USB and try booting the console with the USB already inserted.
If that doesn't work you can try 14719 and do the same thing.

Can't hurt to try imho.

I'll be looking forward to what you've done with it.

It might attempt to read the update folder off of a flash drive, even as E71? If it'll do anything, it'll automatically try to read it, and I don't need to press anything?

Downloading 14719, how far back in menu updates do you think I ought to try? And is there anywhere that hosts old updates that's legal to mention here, or is Google going to be my friend for the umpteenth time? :D

Dash updates are free to distribute ;]
Their also found on gamediscs and on OXM discs.

14699 is the last RGHable dash for the phat.
But 14719 is your best shot at trying since you don't know when it got the E71.

Just stick the flashdrive in and press the powerbutton and pray.

Xbox came today.

Case is cracked.

Bottom part of the back clips is still popped open a bit.

Plug it in.

Boots right up, at the NXE dashboard. Dafuq.

D:2.0.8498.0
K:2.0.8498:0

Interestingly, after having it turned on for a few minutes, it froze. But turning it back off and on, it has yet to freeze again.

Fable 3 launches, though wants a dashboard update, which I'm not doing yet - disk drive still works then.

Gonna pop it open real quick and see if it was ever xclamp fixed.

Edit: for clarification, I didn't even have to try the sync fix.

Edit 2: Frontal warranty sticker is still intact.

Edit 3 - Yeah, never opened, white wire drive is BenQ, right? Zephyr board.

White is a BenQ! Easy to flash, no probe required, just hook up to (mostly any) SATA board and flash it. Fable III update should be fine, it will bring you to 9199.

I meant to reply earlier but then I got hit by the S.M.A.R.T. HDD scan virus malware thing.

As Fudge said, yep Ben-Q is the easiest one to flash.

You could also update it all the way to 14699 (it will reflash the drive and give you a new drive FW)
Then you can have some time on deciding on whether to Reset glitch it or not.

I should install a 40 mm fan on the 2nd heatsink like I did with my RGH Falcon.
It's just to prevent overheating from the GPU.
(a fanguard bolted to the casing also looks pretty neat ;])

I ordered a CK3 Mini, it'll be here by the end of the week/early next week, I already have my Verbatim DVD+DL disks and my 424-B with iExtreme, so assuming my SATA chipset is compatible, I'll be good to go. (If it's not, I have a cheap USB-SATA adapter I'll give a shot just for shiggles before I buy the VIA board.)

Is it required/recommended to update to the latest drive firmware before installing LT 3.0+? (That's the modded drive firmware, right? Trying to learn this stuff quickly)

Another thing I have been wondering - if you're on LT 3.0+ with a verified good burn on Verbatim media from an iExtreme flashed drive, are you pretty much completely Live safe, even on XGD3 games?

And any recommended RGH boards? Xconsoles is out of the coolrunner, which is what I had planned to buy since they seem to be the real deal with the stuff they sell. I know DealExtreme sells some, but I want to avoid that or pretty much any other Chinese distributors because when I order it, even if I have to pay shipping, I'd rather have it in a week than a month and a half.

Thanks :3

You'll have to update to 14699 to get the new drive FW (don't worry 14699 is still glitchable)

Then you can hookup the drive to your flashkit and flash LT+ 3.0 onto it.
Be sure that you KEEP YOUR DVD KEY SAFE!!!
This is your holy grail (except for your CPU key) of your 360 and if you loose that and your drive is busted then you're a far way from home.

Good RGH glitchboard is the Coolrunner TX from Team Xecuter.
I wouldn't give any other board a chance since I know Xecuter stuff is top quality.

You can fashion a NAND programmer from a printercable but imho it's best to get a USB-SPI flasher like the NAND-X

It's way faster then LPT.
