dvd to divx/avi

thinking of buying one of those hard drives that plug into the telly, whats the quickest prog to rip my dvds into avi/divx? does it take ages? want to fill a 500gb drive with stuff (mainly tv shows) that ive already got on dvd

He has an external HDD that can be plugged directly into a TV. He will rip the files from the disc and transfer them to the HDD with his PC, and they watch them on it.
