The Original DS may look like a toy but is much less breakable that the DS lite.
What you can say in favor of the Switch is that it already has more games that the DS, the DSi and the 3DS put together.
It was literally a prototype they rushed to the market unfinished after Sony announced the PSP and Nintendo hedged their bets with the "third pillar" nonsense because even they didn't expect it to take off the way it did. Contrast it to the SP (released just one year earlier) and you can see the line of evolution to the DSL which is what they'd wanted to do once cost allowed/if Sony hadn't decided to get into the handheld market.
Same way they rushed the GBC to market to retain share against the Wonderswan. Nintendo are very reactive like that and prefer to take their sweet time unless prodded.
Switch wise, I can't comment as I found the build quality atrocious on day one and expected the DSL style refresh that wasnt made out of super cheap plastic and trash quality everything (remember this was before any of the joycon stuff, case warping, dock scratching etc.. just day one impression) before it would be worth looking at.
It appears to have flourished but its got a ton of ports, loads of shovelware and a few really unique experiences whereas the 3/DS libraries are as unique as they come and filled with good old fashioned fun games.
