I broke my ds lite a few weeks ago when it accidently fell from about 5 feet onto the hard floor.
The left hinge cracked and the wires are exposed. The top portion has shifted away from the bottom.
When I turn on the ds, the bottom screen is working fine, but the top screen has turned completely white.
Here are some pictures:

Is there any way I can fix this myself?
or would I have to send it back to Nintendo? (Warranty expired)

Difficult to tell for sure without getting it apart. The top screen cable passes through that hinge area, and your drop may have damaged the cable, or it may have just pulled it partially out of its connector. If it's the latter, it's fairly easy to partially disassemble the DS, push the cable home again and reassemble. If the cable is damaged, however, you're sunk, and will either have to buy a new top screen (the ribbon cable is integrated) and fit it yourself, or send it back to Nintendo.

Edit: There's a site here showing step-by-step disassembly of a DS Lite, if you want to try it yourself:

http://www.phosphors.com/nds/

or a video guide here:

Do it at your own risk though!

To me the case doesn't look broken though, just popped apart. You may not need to replace it at all (and if it's just that the cable has been pulled out of its connector, you won't need a new screen either and the repair will cost nothing more than your time and maybe the cost of a tri-wing screwdriver). Again, it's hard to be sure just from a couple of photographs. The only way to find out is to dive in.

Hm, yeah Tigerstar is right, the case just popped off, but it's cracked and the top screen is still white.
I'm going to go to the hardware store to pick up some screwdrivers, and I'll open it up.
Not sure if I'll get anywhere though, never opened it up before.
