yeah NGE isn't too deep, its a lot of wtf but as someone said earlier, shows that try to be deep like NGE usually aren't they are more likely to be wtf-ish or crappy dorama. there are plenty of deepdeep animu out there, NGE just isn't one of them.

As for what the game is like, from what i read its like princess maker. Think of tamagotchi's or any type of pet game where you feed the pet, play with it e.t.c except with further developed gameplay. In this i guess, you get to guide rei - the blue haired chick from NGE, through her life. you could say that you play a god over rei's life or something.
