I tried translating it by copying ぷるるん (pururun in Hiragana) into Google Translate, but all it gave me was "The [pu] [ru] [ru] it is".

プルルン (pururun in katakana) just came out as "[pururun]".

Correct, it is onomatopoeia. It is roughly equivalent to "boingboing" in english.
