OK so ive searched the forums for a while but could not find an exact answer to what i was looking for. I have recently acquired a black Wii with a D4 drive in it. If i replace the ENTIRE drive (not just the board) will it work in the Wii. If it will can a modchip be used as well?

I am aware of soft modding this wii is NOT for me it is for my PARENTS. i want to make this setup as easy as possible using loaders and such would make it difficult for them.

So to sum up: can i replace the D4 with a d3/d2e/d2c etc and add a modchip to it so that all that has to be done is a game is inserted to play.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, any drive in the D2-series works just fine for backup discs, the very first dvd's (were called "DMS" I think) work too.

So basicly, anything that isnt D3 or D4 works ;)

Use a usb loader and to make it easy download cfg, set up the drive, install priloader, install cfg boot.dol and autoboot it
